Fiction Elements Fiction is writing that comes from a writer’s imagination. Both novels and short stories contain four main elements: 1. Plot 2. Character 3. Setting 4. Theme

Short Stories & Novels Short Story - usually revolves around a single idea - is short enough to be read at one sitting Novel - a longer piece of work - involves a more complicated plot

A plot is built around a CONFLICT Conflict- a problem or struggle involving two or more opposing forces Internal Conflict- Conflict within yourself –Man vs. Self (draw a picture of man vs. self) External Conflict- Conflict with someone or something else –Man vs. Man (draw a picture of man vs. man) –Man vs. Nature (draw a picture of man vs. nature) –Man vs. Technology (draw a picture of man vs. technology)

Five Stages of Plot Development #1: Exposition -Sets the stage for a story, characters are introduced, and the setting is described #2: Rising Action - The plot thickens as the conflict begins to unfold. Complications are introduced and suspense builds.

#3: Climax - The point of greatest interest or suspense in the story. It is the TURNING POINT when the action reaches its peak and the outcome is decided. -Usually results in a change in the characters.

#4: Falling Action - Occurs after the climax while a resolution is being solved. #5: Resolution (Dénouement) - The conflict is resolved, all the loose ends are tied up, and we know what happens to the characters.

Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution
