EURISOL, PSI, June 2006E.Wildner, CERN1 Data Bases for Parameter Lists N. Emelianenko, CERN AT-MAS E. Wildner, CERN AT-MAS Presentation is based on a presentation for parameter lists for beta beams

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 2 Outline Parameter List Specification Data Base: added value The design Setup and Maintenance A few examples New implementation for EURISOL Conclusion

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 3 Parameter List Specification Clear Specifications (”stamped”) Single Source Describe the Baseline Versioning

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 4 Data base: Added value, general Unique data source Easily maintainable and extendable (EXCEL ver quickly becomes too complex to manage) Coherence of studies Direct acces from several programs like Mathematica Data export in a variety of formats (txt, PDF, csv, ASCII, word...)

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 5 Data base: Added value, technical Our choice of implementation: ORACLE Professional management of technical framework by CERN ORACLE services Safe Storage ORACLE Data Base security and fine grained roles Easily maintainable and extendable Powerful access and maintenance systems exist (i.e. Golden Retriever) Daily Backups by CERN ORACLE services Assistance by CERN ORACLE support

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 6 Design: Requirements Components bb Parameters Access to DB tools Report generation Logging Search Engine Web Access Data Base

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 7 Design: Structure (1) Impose a rigorous systematization of the knowledge about the system, Separate the parameter definition (metadata) and parameter value (data), Store the system definition (metadata) in the database. Basic object structure for this application: One node, max two parents. Can we reuse this structure for EURISOL? Machine RF System Isotope (ion) Magnet Beam

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 8 Design: Structure (2) Basic object structure for this application: One node, max two parents. Can we reuse this structure for EURISOL? Machine RF System Isotope (ion) Magnet Beam Impinging Beam Separator Ion Source Machine Target Source Linac Beam to experiment

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 9 Origin and Type of Parameter Values The values of a given parameter can have various sources: 1. Given value. The value has to be inserted manually, and for each value the exact source (published document, presentation, web site etc.) must be specified. All sources are registered in the detailed Data Sources list. 2. Automated input from e.g. Mathematica (for the parameters derived from other requiring complex calculations). 3. Calculated on the fly upon parameter access (the formulae are defined and stored in the database along with the parameter definition). The type of the source for a parameter values and unit for the numeric values are defined (fixed) in the parameter definition. The value itself can be either numeric or alpha-numeric.

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 10 Data Base maintenance For Data Base, web and tools: CERN, E. Wildner, Natalia Emelianenko We need a contact person for the setup Versions to be stamped and generated after agreement in task meetings? Holding point systems for (version) updates can be implemented Older versions can be obtained (.pdf and by special tool or request).

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 17 Use data base from Mathematica

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 18 New implementation for EURISOL Existing structure could probably be reused Holding point system to be implemented Playground? Versioning If present structure can be reused: 30 % of N. Emelianenko during 3 months to implememt a system One person from EURISOL working with DB Analyst to structure the system

EURISOL, PSI, June 2006 E.Wildner, CERN Parameter List, 19 Conclusion A Data Base implementation of the bb parameters is now available. Reuse present system Can be set up in 3 months from September (30% availability of analyst) After this some simple management of some quickly trained person is possible. Any data base expert could be able to help
