Entrance Ways Providing a positive first impression to families, children and visitors is important.

Families feel Welcome

Photos Digital photo frames are a great way to share activities that have occurred during the day with parents

A comfortable place for parents to sit and converse with care givers at arrival or pick up, observe their child, or sit/read/or do a puzzle with their child to assist with the transition between home and child care.

Providing space for family shows that they are valued.

Parents appreciate being able to refer to staff names and qualifications

Natural materials make the space feel home-like and welcoming

Staff feel more comfortable and relaxed in a beautiful environment.

Home-like touches such as photos of the children and families, make families feel comfortable and valued.

Cultural Diversity Culturally diverse art and decorations are a simple way to show families they are welcome and add to the learning experiences of the children.

Cozy space  Infants and toddlers like to have small spaces where they can relax and feel safe

Be creative Consider various ways that you can make use of the space that is available.

Cozy spaces can be simple

Comfortable places to relax are important. Children have varying tolerance levels and some may need a place to go and “chill” before rejoining peers.

Closet Space You may have closet space available in the children’s play space. Consider using it as a cozy corner for the children instead of as a storage location.

Place for Privacy  Spaces for privacy and quiet must also be easy to supervise to ensure the safety of the children

Fabric is used to create a feeling of a separate space and privacy. Fire retardant fabric should be used.

This space is large enough for two children to share and so supports the growth of relationships.

There are many options to provide space for privacy.

This space includes a mirror so children can see themselves when they look up.

Relax Children need a space where they can lay down and relax when they are tired or just want to be alone.

Self Regulation When there is space to do so, children can learn to self regulate their behaviour and take a break when they are feeling overwhelmed.

Partnerships  Share materials or resources with other facilities when the children are done with them  Create partnerships such as with the local high school or college to create materials
