RECYCLING Quality in the Environment Team #26: Kate Gilland & Yue Kou

Objective  Design and distribute a survey to State College residents  Based on data, compare results with research findings regarding recycling rates  Pin point reasons to explain results and give advice to improve quality in the environment in State College

Why Recycle? Create cleaner land, air, water and a better quality of life!  Saves energy  Prevents pollution  Creates Jobs  Saves money  Preserves natural resources

Prospective Study  The survey gives two options per question to clearly differentiate between data  The last question is more for the use of improving quality in the environment, not for analytical purposes

Data Collection Plan  The data is focused on students, to check whether State College meets the national average recycle rate.  The data is collected randomly twice per month for 4 months from August to December.  The following on campus halls and off campus apartments were picked as the samples:  On-campus halls: North Halls, South Halls, East Halls, and West Halls  Off-campus apartments: Lion’s Gate, Nittany Crossing, State College Park, The Pointe, Parkway Plaza, and Vairo Village.

Data Accuracy and Integrity  Include questions on the survey that are straight forward and leave little room for interpretation  Collect data from a diverse group over extended period of time to apply normality assumption  Keep data anonymous

Analysis of Results  Prospective study:  47.6% of year olds recycle on a weekly basis  70.83% of 23+ year olds recycle on a weekly basis  The student recycling rates generated by the survey directly reflect the rates shown in the data, validating the data collected.

Improve Quality in the Environment  R educe the amount of materials you use, which reduces the amount of waste created  R euse materials when possible and recycle whenever possible  R ethink about the materials you use and the ones you throw away  R eorganize how you recycle inside to prevent from having to separate materials later  R emind others to constantly be conscious of recycling
