“NOTECARDS” Information for Research Project

Purpose of notecards: ■Overall: Gather information that will support your claim about WHY THAT ARTIST IS IMPORTANT TO MUSIC AND CULTURE. ■Individually: Each card should be based around a DIRECT QUOTE that describes an important fact about your artist and addresses the above question. ■Note: Limit your biographical info – this is a persuasive essay, not an informational one.

Requirements: ■Draw from at least 6 credible sources –Digital OR print/book ■Print and annotate your sources first –You don’t need to find all 6 sources before you begin annotating/note cards. –You must hand these in with your final paper; keep them in your folder. ■20 notecards total (increments of 5) –(I check these online, no printing needed) ■Note: You will also create your works cited from Noodle Tools.

Why Noodle Tools? ■Easier for you and me… ■You → when you go to write your essay the information is already typed, cited, and categorized ■Me → I can track all of your progress online and I don’t have to take the cards from you/return them

Steps: 1.Find a source from one of the databases (see handout) 2.Create a citation for it in Noodle Tools –Bibliography tab -> Create a… DATABASE -> type of source = REFERENCE SOURCE -> Quick Cite: Copy and paste citation 3.Print, read, and annotate source 4.Create notecard(s) with key quote(s) from source –Create notecard from source citation page by clicking NEW –Create new notecard and select source from drop down menu 5.Save and drag onto dashboard.

You need to have something in each of these three boxes for a complete card. (Direct quote, paraphrase or summary, and my ideas) See next slides for what to include specifically.

Title (Main Idea) ■The main idea should summarize the information you include on that card ■Should be a word or phrase

Direct Quotation ■Copy/paste or retype significant quotes from articles that you could use in your paper ■Remember: choose quotes that say it better than you can AND/OR make key analytical statements about your topic.

Paraphrase or summary ■Put the quote into your own words ■Keep all the essential information ■Define any new/key terms

My ideas ■Interpret, evaluate and reflect on what you've just learned. ■Ask questions about what you don't understand. ■Identify what you want to know more about.

My ideas ■Interpret, evaluate and reflect on what you've just learned. ■Ask questions about what you don't understand. ■Identify what you want to know more about. ■List what you need to do next.
