 Hamlet was the only son of the King of Denmark. He loved his father and mother dearly, and was happy with his girlfriend, Ophelia. Her father, Polonius, was the King's Chamberlain.

 While Hamlet was studying in Germany, his father died because a serpent bit the king. The Queen, before the King’s funeral, decided to marry again and to marry Claudius, the dead King's brother.  He didn’t believe it. He suspected that the wicked Claudius had killed the King, because he wanted to get the crown and marry the Queen but he couldn’t accuse Claudius.

 Two soldiers and Horatio, Hamlet’s friend, are in the battlements of Elsinore castle, to see if the story of the ghost of the castle is true. The ghost appeared. The three men informed Prince of their vision of his father.

 The new kings celebrating their wedding. Everyone in the court was happy and joyful, except Hamlet. He is wearing black because it has been only two months since his father died.

 He is angry because the new king is Claudius and he married his mother, soon after his father’s death.  He discusses Laertes' request to leave court and go back to school in France. Laertes is the son of Polonius, chamberlain’s king. Claudius agrees with Polonius and gives Laertes permission to go.

 Then Claudius speaks to his court about the changes in the court and the quickness of his marriage. He says he is sad for the death of his brother but joyful for his new wife.  Claudius asks Hamlet why he is so gloomy. Hamlet replies that his grief upon losing his father still deeply affects him.  Hamlet decides to join them this coming night to see the ghost for himself.

 Laertes said goodbyes to his sister Ophelia, before he leaves for school in France. He tries to convince Ophelia of forgetting about Hamlet because he’s destined to become King, and he won’t be serious in his relationship with her.

 Polonius gives his son one more lecture before he leaves on how to conduct himself when he goes back to school.  Polonius discussed with Ophelia about her relationship with Hamlet. He, like Laertes, didn’t trust Hamlet's intentions. Ophelia agrees she will not see Hamlet any more.

 At the next night the guards, Horatio and Hamlet are on the battlements waiting for the ghost. The ghost appears and implores him to speak. The ghost tells Hamlet to apart from the others.

 She tries to return Hamlet some of the presents Hamlet gave her when courting her. Hamlet reacts cruelly, denies his love for her and questions Ophelia’s honesty.

 On another part of the battlements, the ghost tells Hamlet that he is he's father and that he was murdered by Claudius, who now wears the crown and sleeps with his wife. He snuck into his garden while he was napping and poured poison into his ear. Claudius told the court, that a serpent bit and killed him. Hamlet swears that he will kill Claudius.  Hamlet will pretend to be crazy to avoid suspicious until he can avenge his father's death.  Ophelia tells Polonius that she has followed his orders and has broken up with Hamlet and that now Hamlet has gone crazy.

 Polonius thinks that Hamlet’s madness is the result of Ophelia’s rejection and they decide to go and inform Gertrude and Claudius about that. They leave, after Polonius chastises himself for making what appears to be a wrong judgement with reference to Hamlet's true feelings for Ophelia.  Hamlet has been acting strangely and no one knows why. Gertrude guesses it is because of the death of his father and her marriage to his uncle; Claudius is not so sure this is the reason.

 Polonius tells the King and Queen that Hamlet was mad is caused by Ophelia's rejecting. The Queen didn’t agree. The king didn’t believe this explanation and he wants a proof.  Gertrude and Claudius leave leaving Polonius alone. He says that he will prove his theory by speaking to Hamlet and asking him about Ophelia. Polonius interviews Hamlet, but the Prince’s answers to his questions are nonsensical. He speaks about his sadness and details his misery. Then a group of players who travel to Elsinore castle to entertain the court entered.

 Hamlet asks Polonius to take excellent care of the players and to find them quarters. Hamlet tells the First Player to perform a play with some speeches that Hamlet will write. The player agrees.  Hamlet makes a plan: He will stage a play exactly based on the murder of his father according to the ghost. While it is played he will observe Claudius. If the king is guilty Hamlet will see it in his face.

 The play begins. A queen and king are shown happily married; the king takes a nap; a poisoner enters and pours something in the king’s ear, killing him. At this moment, unable to contain himself, Hamlet erupts telling everyone that soon the poisoner will marry the king’s wife.

 Claudius rises calls for lights and orders the play to end. Hamlet know that ghost was telling the truth.  Everybody leaves following Claudius. Hamlet explains his thoughts about the murder of his father and revenge.  Polonius tells Hamlet that the Queen wishes to speak with him.

 This scene gives insight into Claudius' thoughts. He admits to killing his brother and starts to realize the difficulties he is in. He tries to atone for his sins by praying. Polonius enters and says that Hamlet is going to meet with his mother in the queen’s chamber and he is going to hide behind the curtains to spy their conversation and inform the king.  Polonius and the queen are in her chamber awaiting for Hamlet’s arrival. Polonius hides behind a curtain. The queen tries to be firm and scold his son for his behaviour but she is confronted by an angry and erratic Hamlet. She panics and screams for help. When Polonius hears her scream he also cries for help.

 Hamlet enters and gives the most famous soliloquy in literature, beginning with “To be or not to Be”. After this long meditation about suicide, he sees Ophelia.  She tries to return Hamlet some of the presents Hamlet gave her when courting her. Hamlet reacts cruelly, denies his love for her and questions Ophelia’s honesty.

 Hamlet thinks that the voice belongs to Claudius and stabs Polonius through the curtains, killing him.

 The Queen, horrified at what Hamlet has done, tries to chastise him, but Hamlet says his deed is nowhere as bad as killing a king and marrying the old king's wife. Hamlet goes on to explain to the Queen all that he has discovered. The Queen thinks Hamlet is crazy.

 Hamlet, dragging Polonius' body behind him, leaves.
