Aim #72: How do scientists clone organisms? Hello Dolly!!

1) What is a Clone? A clone is an organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which it was produced.

2) Do the cells of our body make exact copies of themselves? Yes. When? Growth Repair

3) What process ensures that the offspring will be genetically identical? DNA Replication

4) Asexual Reproduction: X Genetic Information (DNA) Parent Offspring a) How many parents? b) How does the genetic Information between the parent and offspring compare?

5) Cloning vs. Asexual Reproduction Cloning is a technique that accomplishes the same end result as __________reproduction. What is the end result? The production of offspring with identical genetic information as the parent. asexual

6) Can we clone organisms that normally reproduce sexually? Scientists have recently been able to clone animals.

How is this done?

7) Steps of Cloning: 1)The nucleus from an egg cell is removed. 2)The nucleus of a somatic cell from a donor is removed. 3)The nucleus of the somatic cell is placed inside the egg cell. 4)The egg cell with the new nucleus is placed inside the womb. 5)When the baby is born, it will have the same genetic information as the donor.

8) Why Clone? 1) Clone Stem Cells 2) Revive endangered or extinct species 3) Reproducing a deceased pet 4) Clone humans??

9) How are Identical Twins Formed? + SpermEgg Fertilization Zygote Mitosis Twin #1Twin #2

10) Why do Identical Twins look alike? Zygote After the cell is fertilized, it begins to divide by mitosis. Therefore the genetic information is identical in each of the cells.

11) How are Fraternal Twins Formed? + SpermEgg + SpermEgg Zygote

12) Why do Fraternal Twins look different? Zygotes They are formed from two different sperm and two different eggs.
