HUNGER PAINS OF THE CHICKENS (BROWN EGG LAYERS)! Presented by: Mallarie Stookey, Brandon Rice and Skylar Campbell 2

Nutrient Requirements for Growing Pullets Protein- 17% Arginine – 0.94 % Lysine – 0.80 % Methionine -.28 % Cystine -.31 % Threonine-.64 % Tryptophan-.16 % Calcium-.9 % Phosphorus-.4 % 3

4 Common Feeds Cereals- –Barley –Corn –Wheat Fats and Oils –Tallow –Poultry Fat –Feed grade animal fat Proteins –Canola Oil –Fish Meal –Field Peas Cereal By-products –Middlings –Bran –Millrun

Common Disorders Vitamin A Deficiency Vitamin K Deficiency Pantothenic Acid Deficiency (Vit. B5) 5

Vitamin A Deficiency Description –Rapid growth falls below normal –Acid content of the blood will increase Symptoms –Droopiness –Staggering Gait –Ruffled appearance of feathers. 6

Disorder One Causes –Not enough consumption of Vit. A Effects on Production –Decreased Size –Death 7

Vitamin A Deficiency Prevention Measures –Feed a feed with adequate Vit. A Especially during the early growth stages 8

Vitamin K Deficiency Description –Impairment of blood coagulation –Results in production of prothrombin Symptoms –Hemorrhagic Syndrome in day old chicks –Hemorrhagic blemishes occurred to the breast legs and wings 9

Vitamin K Deficiency Causes –Low dietary levels of vitamin K –For chicks: Low levels in the maternal’s diet –Coccidiosis can have severe damage to their intestinal wall that will cause bleeding Effects on Production –Bloody Eggs –Death 10

Vitamin K Deficiency Prevention Measures –Inclusion of Menadione at 1-4 mg/ton of feeds in the common practice 11

Pantothenic Acid Deficiency (Vit. B5) Description –Needed by every living organism to survive –Helps regulate chemical reactions that produce energy from the break down of fats, carbs and proteins. Symptoms –Retarded Growth –Feathers become ragged –Eye lids stick together firmly –Crusty scabs appear in the corner of mouth –Skin on bottom of feet becomes thickened 12

Pantothenic Acid Deficiency (Vit. B5) Causes –Diets that are composed largely of meat scraps, cereal grains and wheat midlings –Doesn’t gain enough of the factor required by the chicks –Kiln-drying of corn tends to destroy the pantothenic acid present Effects on Production –Death 13

Pantothenic Acid Deficiency (Vit. B5) Prevention Measures –An adequate supply- 5mg/lb of feed –Testing your feed to insure adequate amounts of necessary nutrients 14
