Unit 8 Teaching Vocabulary Objectives: Know some assumptions about vocabulary and vocabulary building Will have known some methods for presenting new vocabulary Know how to help students consolidate vocabulary Familiar with the ways to help students develop vocabulary building strategies

8.1 Understanding vocabulary and vocabulary learning Task 2

1)Compounds (two examples): Example 1: A compound word is a word made of two smaller words that are put together. For example: butter + fly = butterfly! Sometimes the new word's meaning is very different from what the other two words mean. Have you ever seen a stick of butter that flies or a fly made of butter? Of course not! You have to remember the meanings of these compound words.

Example 2: Sometimes you can use the meanings of the little words to predict, or figure out the meaning of the compound word. Here is an example: Dog + House = Doghouse! A doghouse is a house for a dog!

More examples: newspaper, pigtail, sandstorm, ladybug( 瓢虫 ), thumbnail, handbag Phrases: look up to, get rid of, catch up with 2) The article “the” in English “ 饺子 ”in Chinese 3) Self consciousness and perception 4) Treat active and passive vocabulary differently 5) Translation is limited, learning in context is the best way 6), 7) ① explained in the same language, enhancing language feel ② better to express original meaning, esp. when there is no equivalent in native language ③ still not the best for vocabulary teaching and learning 8), 9) Better remembered with more contextual connections 10) Using is a very effective way of memorizing words, it’s also true in native tongue, e.g., 发聋振 ( ) kuì

8.2. What does knowing a word involve? word formation or morphological knowledge denotative meaning connotative meaning collocations synonyms, antonyms and hyponyms receptive and productive vocabulary

8.3 Ways of presenting vocabulary Ways suggested: 1)Use pictures, diagrams, maps or videos to show meanings Example 1: Prepositions of Place (This diagram shows some of the more common prepositions of place and indicates their meaning. )

2)Use realia 3)Mime or act out to show meanings 4)Use related words: synonyms, antonyms, lexical sets 5)Translate and exemplify for technical or abstract words 6)Word formation (esp. Latin affixes) 7)Examples created by teachers 8)Eliciting before offering meanings 9)Checking understanding to get feedback 10)Relating newly learned words to real life 11)Predicting problems

Task 5 Give reasons to support your idea Task 6 (Practice by yourselves after class.) 8.4 Consolidating vocabulary  Consolidating is more important than learning itself. Various ways must be explored to consolidate the learned words, and consolidating must be made meaningful and interesting.

 Labeling: (competition can make learners more motivated)  Spotting the differences  Describing and drawing  Memorizing names of pictures or objects  Using word thermometers

 Using word series  Word bingo

 Word association  Odd man out  Synonyms and antonyms  Using word categories

 Using word net-work

 Making new words from a given word English: he, she, sin, in, hen…… 8.5 Developing vocabulary building strategies Review regularly

Guess meaning from context Clues: topic, structure, linguistic pattern Organize vocabulary effectively Use a dictionary Use the learned words Practice (speaking and writing, the more the better) Other strategies Making full use of the sound, form and meaning of the word Examples: Wednesday: 星期三举行婚礼 barley: 酒吧里的大麦啤酒
