What is a National Heritage Area? -Designated by Congress and Subsidiary of the National Park Service - NPS is a partner and advisor -Natural, cultural and historic resources combine to form nationally important landscape -Community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development -Historic preservation -Natural resource conservation -Recreation -Heritage tourism -Educational projects -Currently 49 designated Heritage areas nationwide -Heritage Area Strategy -Foster public-private partnerships -Engage non-profit organizations -Shape both short and long term interests -Unify and empower community organizations -Highlight unique & distinctive qualities of regions and localities -Model collaboration and common goal development
