Science Grade 3

LO: to explain how different adaptations help animals survive in the polar regions

Starter Locate polar regions on the map. How are they called? Why are they so cold? Use your knowledge from Geography.

Adaptations of polar bears and penguins Look at these pictures Adaptations of polar bears and penguins Look at these pictures. Talk about how these animals have adapted to live in the extremely cold regions. Think about: White fur Strong claws Lots of body fat Sense of smell Think about: Webbed feet Wings-flippers Lots of body fat-blubber Streamlined body

Adaptations of polar bears

Teacher to model writing Write sentences about how polar bears and penguins have adapted to live in the polar regions. The polar regions are very cold. Polar bears have fur on their body to keep them warm….

Independent work HA and MA: write sentences describing how the penguin and the polar bear have adapted to the life in the desert. LA: to write words describing the adaptations of the penguin and the polar bear
