SUBJECT VS. THEME VS. MORAL What is the difference between a subject, theme, and moral?
SUBJECT VS THEME VS MORAL Subject: Topics and subjects that the author discusses or mentions. Ex: Hatred and War; Love and Honor; Good vs. Evil, etc. Theme: a message from the author to the reader through the literature; an author’s opinion on a matter/topic. Ask yourself: What is the author trying to say about the subject? Ex: People are innately evil; Love brings out weakness Moral: A lesson or teaching from the author directly to the reader. (Usually involving words such as never, don’t, do, expect) Ex: Don’t trust anyone; Never give up; Do as your told, etc.

PG#17 END OF ACT I3/20/15 Aim: How can we analyze relationships in DOAS through the author’s writing techniques? Do Now: What would you do if you found out your husband or wife was hurting themselves? What approach would you take?
In groups of four, finish reading Act I. Then: Student A: Draw a picture of Biff removing the rubber tubing. Draw, label, and include quotes and color in your picture. Include these ideas in your picture. Student B: Focus on Miller’s presentation of Linda and her relationship with her children and husband(pages 36-49). What does Linda think is the trouble with Willy’s life? Why is she angry at her sons? What do we learn about Willy’s mental situation? What is Willy trying to do and how? Why does Linda put the rubber hose back after she had taken it off? What does this tell you about her? Student C: Focus on the mood at the end of the Act. Why is Willy interested when Biff mentions Bill Oliver? What plans are made at the end of the act? What is the atmosphere? How is Miller building suspense? Student D: Miller uses stage directions to reveal Biff’s attitude towards Willy and that something has happened that changed his relationship with his father. Find three quotes in Act I that specifically tells us that something has happened between Biff and Willy in the past. Explain through these quotes what you could infer about their fallout. N
BIFF: Because I know he’s a fake and he doesn’t like anybody around who knows! What could this be about?
