Saysha Morrisey EDU650:Teaching, Learning and Leading in the 21 st Century Professor Joyce Frazier Aug. 17, 2015

My name is Saysha Grizzle-Morrisey. I am a graduate of Elizabeth City State University located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, there I obtained my BS in Biology. I also attended East Carolina University located in Greenville, NC to take some education courses to obtain my teaching license. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree at Ashford University located in California. I am a NC certified teacher licensed to teach middle and secondary grades. I have taught at the classroom level for five years. I am applying for the Lead Teacher position. I believe I have the credentials and experience to perform the necessary tasks. I desire to become a well-respected teacher, that has the ability to motivate and encourage students to learn and succeed to their greatest potential.

My signature philosophical quote: “As an educator, a philosophy focus should be to ensure that students get the essential knowledge and skills needed to be successful in life.” (Roberson, 2014) I have three main points to focus on for a student directed philosophy: Students are individuals Back to the Basics Knowledge and the teacher Newman, R. (2013). Teaching and learning in the 21st century: Connecting the dots. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc. Roberson, S. (2014). Education. Improving Teaching and Learning: Three Models to Reshape Educational Practice, 134(3),

Effective Teachers Manage By:  Setting the tone of the classroom  Classroom arrangement and seating arrangement student centered  Learning environment suitable to create a community of learners “ The most important factor governing student learning is classroom management” (Wong, 2009) Newman, R. (2013). Teaching and learning in the 21st century: Connecting the dots. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc. Wong, H. K., & Wong, R. T. (2009). Classroom Arrangement Models

Traditional School Public school students attend according to attendance zone Subjected to large class sizes Teachers must be “highly qualified” Receives funding from state government Operates under a school board Consistently utilizes technology in classrooms 21 st Century skills integrated Classroom model is teacher-directed Magnet School Alternative school that students choose to attend not based on attendance zone Subjected to large class sizes Teachers must be “highly qualified” Receives funding from school district Operates under a school board Consistently utilizes technology in classrooms 21 st Century Skills integrated Classroom model is teacher and student-directed Newman, R. (2013). Teaching and learning in the 21st century: Connecting the dots. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc.

Effective lesson planning begins with good learning objectives. Effective objectives are manageable, measurable, made first and most important (Newman, 2013). The best way to design effective lesson plans is by using the backwards design approach. Using backward design planning begins with the end in mind. “As teachers create effective lesson plans, they must have a clear goal on what they want the students to learn.” Students’ in the learning process is actively engaged. Students are teacher-and-student-directed in the classroom. Students are able to take over their learning and own what they learn. Newman, R. (2013). Teaching and learning in the 21st century: Connecting the dots. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc.

Formative Assessments Used to check for learning; assessment for learning Has the greatest impact on student achievement Preeminent to support learning in the classroom Examples include: bell-work, exit tickets, quizzes, fist-to-five, etc. Summative Assessments Used to evaluate the effectiveness of learning; assessment of learning Calculated post-learning Preeminent to help teacher improve teaching strategies Examples include: benchmarks, major tests, final exams, etc. Assessment refers to the process used to determine, in measurable terms, the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs of the learner (Newman, 2013). Assessments are to be used to shape teaching and learning for students and actively engaging them in their own learning process. The role of assessments is to focus on and ensure student achievement. There are two main types of assessments… & JCheek. (2008). Formative assessment versus summative assessment [Presentation slides]. Effective teachers stay updated on current practices and set professional goals for learning. Through teacher leadership, teachers exhibit a set of skills that influence their colleagues and students. Teacher leaders can possess a variety of roles. To grow professionally, teachers… Set goals Plan, Teach, Reflect, and Apply Engage with Professional Organizations “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” Henry Ford (Newman, 2013) Newman, R. (2013).
