IRS & Taxes Tony Nguyen / Pooja Paode IB Film II

THE IRS - Internal Revenue Service - Founded in 1862 to collect funds for war - 16th Amendment permits federal govt. to collect income taxes - Over 106,000 employees all over the U.S.

Purpose The IRS is the revenue service of the US federal government. The IRS is responsible for collecting taxes and the interpretation and enforcement of the Internal Revenue Code.

Modern IRS - Presidential tax returns were kept on microfilm in the 60s and 70s, which allowed Nixon’s tax records to be leaked. - This leak was controversial and publicized in the media, so presidents since then have been pressured to release their records by the media.

Modern IRS and Technology Post-1960s onward saw massive computerization efforts. In 1995, the IRS began to use the public Internet for electronic filing. Since the introduction of e-filing, self- paced online tax services have flourished, helping/replacing tax accountants to prepare returns. In 2003, the IRS struck a deal with tax software vendors: o The IRS would not develop online filing software. o In return, software vendors would provide free e-filing to most Americans.

Today In 2009, 70% of filers qualified for free electronic filing of federal returns. In 2010, more than 66% (98 million) of tax returns are expected to be filed electronically.

Media oversight Organizations like the IRS forum: o Publicize IRS problems- all media and most taxpayers have a strong interest in the IRS. The media has repeatedly been interested in abuses of the bureaucracy and abuses of power. Most taxpayers have an IRS "story" or otherwise are concerned about a possible IRS examination. o Provide a unique repository of IRS abuses and problems.

IRS and Social Media Youtube: IRS has informative video channels on the site, featuring various tax related topics in a bunch of different languages. Twitter: IRS tweets tax-related announcements, such as news and hiring initiatives. Facebook: IRS has pages to post tax related information for professionals and other people who have issues with the IRS. The IRS has trouble regulating corporations' online activity and intends to improve the help it gives organizations regarding the restrictions put on them.
