Applying to University Wrexham Glyndŵr University

Where to start? What do I want to study? Where do I want to study it?

The right course for me… Career ambitions Subject interest Previous study

And the right place to study it… Do they offer the course I want? What experience am I looking for? City or Campus? Am I being realistic? What is on my ‘wish-list’?

Your wish-list;

Summary: Be clear on what you want to do Narrow down where you don’t want to go Start to gather your information Compile your wish-list Filter down to 5 choices

Where to get your information? The UCAS search tool is a good place to start;

When do I apply? 15 October 2016 – Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine 15 January 2017 – Deadline for most other courses 24 March 2017 – Deadline for some Art & Design courses July 2016 – sessions at Helsby High School to register on UCAS and start personal statement

Starting your application

A strong application Correct qualifications entered All questions answered - accurately A solid Personal Statement

The Personal Statement – top tips What do you want to do, and why? Tell us about your passion for the subject, without using the word passion. At all. Make it readable Get the technical stuff right

And some things to avoid… DON’T start with a quote Don’t mention a university by name Don’t get too much advice And don’t copy. Ever!

All done? So what happens next? Your completed application gets sent electronically to your 5 choices Each university considers your application according to its admissions policy Your UCAS Track will be updated when offers are made

Your expectations of us Universities have until May to make a decision if you apply by Jan 15 Some will take longer than others Be prepared to provide us with more information if required

Our expectations of you ‘I’m calling on behalf of…’ ‘My friend has already had an offer for…’ ‘No, I don’t have my UCAS number, sorry…’

How do we assess your application? Different universities assess in different ways Some may interview, some may not Some many require further information – portfolio, audition Any offer made will be Conditional or Unconditional If you’re currently studying for a qualification, we will ask you to complete that qualification

Ready to make your decision? Once you have all your offers back, you can make your decision Conditional offer - you can choose a Firm choice and an Insurance choice Unconditional offer – you can only choose a Firm choice

What happens next? Awaiting results? Need to complete a DBS? No conditions to meet?

Final things to think about Accommodation Student Finance Join Freshers’ groups on social media Checklist of what you need to take with you

Any questions?
