Unit B: Chemistry

Unit B: What are we going to learn? An overview of this unit: – Product life cycles – A review of chemical and physical properties – Elements and the periodic table – Subatomic particles – Types of chemical bonds – Balancing chemical equations – pH scale – Valence electrons

OneNote From now on, only make ONE page per activity, not one for the activity and one for the analysis questions. – The activity, notes, data, and analysis questions should all be on the same page. ONLY make separated pages for UC assessments. I will remind you when we get to one.

Make a New TAB in OneNote Title the Tab “Unit B- Chemistry”

Updated Class Procedure We are starting a “Class Warning System.” If you get 3 warnings in one rotation, you lose Funny Friday/Weekend Update and extra time to work on analysis questions that week. Earning a class warning: – Everyone yelling out at once – Entering the room loudly/not doing warm up – I have to stop talking because you are interrupting – Not following directions, etc.

Activity 12: Evaluating Materials Create a new page in your Unit B tab. Please open your books to page B3.

Activity 12: Evaluating Materials Jesus Storybook Bible- Genesis

So what? What does it mean to be a good steward? What does that have to do with chemistry? “Why does it matter? I will be long gone before this earth is destroyed!” How can I make an impact on this world? How can understanding God help us understand chemistry? How can understanding chemistry help us understand God?

God’s Plan for the Earth Restoration! God is in the business of making broken things whole again; as people who love him, we want to be the same way. Taking care of the earth is a task that has been embedded in our DNA. It is one of our missions.

Again…so what? This unit, we will be looking at the chemical makeup of certain substances in order to try to analyze a product and decide if it is a good one to purchase. We will be tying chemistry and morality together as we explore how our actions impact our environment.

Activity 12: Evaluating Materials What makes a better drink container: glass, aluminum, or plastic? What are some factors that influence your decision?

Activity 12: Evaluating Materials Read the procedure on B5 carefully! It is your responsibility to complete what it says! You have slips of paper, a marker, and Material Data Cards. I did not make a student sheet for you; follow directions carefully to find out what to do.

Tonight’s Homework Complete the “What is Matter?” homework sheet in OneNote. I will be grading it tomorrow! It needs to be done tonight. We will go over it during our next class It is worth 5 points!
