Anabolic Steroids

“Steroids” Corticosteroidsvs. Anabolic steroids -reduces swelling -synthetic testosterone -reduces inflammation -increase size, strength -oral, nasal, dermalof muscle

Effects on Male Male hormone (steroid) is administered -males then have too much testosterone and testicles adapt by producing little or no testosterone -negative effects of “steroids” on the male are due to testicles producing little or no testosterone

Effects on Male Increase size and strength of muscles (if muscles are exercised) Testicles atrophy Decrease sperm production Erectile Dysfunction – impotence Increase in size of breasts Loss of hair on head Acne Unpredictable anger or rage (“roid rage”)

Effects on Female Male hormone is administered – Male hormone “covers” the female hormone – Male secondary sex characteristics appear in the female

Effects on Female Increase size and strength of muscles (if muscles are exercised) Ovulation and menstruation stop Clitoris enlarges Voice lowers Acne Unpredictable anger or rage (“roid rage”)

Permanency? Short term effects in male are most often reversible (hair loss is many times an exception) Short term effects in female are many times irreversible (menstrual cycle and ovulation are an issue)

Long Term Effects Stunts growth (growth plate closes in youth) Hypertension Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) Liver cancer
