Info-Tech Research Group1 Choose a Consumerization Strategy Find the right path for your organization.

Info-Tech Research Group2 Business executives and end users in 80% of organizations are pushing IT to support consumer devices and applications. CIOs cannot ignore the trend, and must choose how to adopt consumer technology. Introduction CIOs confronted with demands from business executives and other end users to allow the use of consumer devices within the organization. Any CIO wanting to prepare the organization for consumerization. CIOs trying to get ahead of the consumerization wave and capitalize on it. Plan a consumer technology strategy that best meets the needs of the organization. Form an adoption plan that conforms to IT's recommendation on risk, budget, reimbursement models, etc. This Research Is Designed For:This Research Will Help You:

Info-Tech Research Group3 Executive Summary Consumerization of IT is happening in many organizations that are not ready for it. Determine the appropriate strategy that balances user demands with IT’s capabilities and requirements. 1. Your consumerization strategy must encompass infrastructure and applications elements. 2. Doing nothing is not an option, but you do have a low-cost option for managing consumerization. This ‘limited’ strategy offers a limited range of functionality, but will satisfy most users demanding consumerization. 3. While the limited strategy provides only narrow access to organizational data, it does open the door to a wide range of unmanaged applications. 4. Assess whether you want to pursue a more ‘open’ and proactive approach to driving consumerization. Key factors to consider reflect both the need for consumerization and elements that can make the transition to an open strategy easier. 5. Whichever strategy you choose, all elements of the strategy must be aligned with each other: policy, budget and reimbursement must work together to form a coherent approach.

Info-Tech Research Group4 Prior experience with consumer technology drives interest 72% of the time*; that usually means and internet. Consumerization strategies lie between two extremes Limited strategy Limited set of applications: , internet, and calendar. Generally stricter acceptable use policy. Very low cost to secure: recoverable in the first year. Relies on free tools inside of Exchange. Open strategy Access to a broader range of corporate applications. Access to secured business data. Cost to secure can range up to the $100k’s. Relies on two technologies: Mobile device management: software installed on- device to enforce policy. Virtual desktop: software runs on a remote server, keeping data safe from malware. Evaluation of mobile apps for incorporation into the enterprise. The value of Consumerization to the end user ultimately lies in the range of applications you provide. You can satisfy much of the demand for consumerization using the limited strategy. The open strategy tries to drive business value through a more proactive approach. *(Source: Info-Tech Research Group, N=53)

Info-Tech Research Group5 Form the consumerization strategy with the help of IT managers Evaluate the options for adoption of consumer technology. Assess the risks and required investment to eliminate those risks. Tasks to delegate to applications and infrastructure managers: Understands the organizational appetite for consumerization. Recommends a policy approach that is consistent with the technology solution. Builds support throughout the organization. Delegates relevant implementation tasks to the IT managers. Obtains funding for budget needs. CIO roles and responsibilities: CIO Risk Management and Security Application Development Support Network access Application Manager Infrastructure Manager Evaluate technology Form strategy HR Legal and compliance Architect systems Design software solutions Advise

Info-Tech Research Group8 A change in direction alters the power dynamic between IT and enterprise users Today, vendors of consumer technology are adapting their products to the enterprise. Now the users define expectations for device and application functionality. During the Great Recession… we hunkered down in IT. All the end-users decided to go buy iPhones, smartphones, and cell phones and embrace social networking. - National Lifecycle Manager

For these applications, IT is not involved in Selection of the application Licensing, updates, or security
