Teri Vigars, Administrator Jen Drake, Head Trainer STAR-NY Sharing Technology & Academic Resources – New York Consortium

Presented by Teri A. Vigars, Administrator Jen Drake, Head Trainer

. a consortium of New York State colleges and universities that have joined together to share resources and expertise to better meet student needs for online tutoring. Colleges and universities must ensure all students have access to academic support services. Online tutoring allows tutors and tutees to engage in tutoring sessions regardless of their respective locations by collaborating via the Internet.

 Motivation: make additional academic support available to students when and where they were struggling.  Theory: follow same model as face-to-face tutoring with focus on encouraging independent learning versus editing student papers.  Method: provide real-time (synchronous) web- based tutoring Monday-Thursday 9:00PM- midnight versus -based (asynchronous) support.  Searched for appropriate platform to meet our needs; chose WorldWideWhiteboard from Link Systems International (LSI).

 Conversation at New York College Learning Skills Association (NYCLSA) with LSI representative and Marilyn Webb fromTC3 ★ Budget cuts ★ Need for more support for students ★ Increasing emphasis on online education ★ Positive impact of our theoretical approach to tutoring STAR  A STAR is born !

 All students sign in through database established and maintained by SUNY Cortland.  Administrative page (password protected) to allow campus supervisors access to information in the database.  Tutors and campus supervisors trained by the Lead Trainer at beginning of semester.  Quality control through use of session logs monitored by Lead Trainer and campus supervisors.  Two writing tutors on Sunday and Tuesday nights.

Student Surveys The technology for this service was easy to use: Spring 16 (110) 96% Agreed or Strongly Agreed Fall 15 (91) 99% Agreed or Strongly Agreed This session helped me with my assignment/ problem/homework: Spring 16 99% Agreed or Strongly Agreed Fall 15 99% Agreed or Strongly Agreed

Comments: ★ “The help is amazing. I love the security of having another set of eyes look at my paper since I am taking 100% online classes. I often get dinged for my grammar, so this online tutoring is very helpful. This is the 2nd time I used this service, this time was quick, and I had fewer errors, which makes me realize I am learning. The 1st time took a LOT longer, I feel bad for the tutor that night! Thank you!” ★ “[Tutor] was very helpful and walked me through my question step by step with questions about what I should do next for the equation. I will definitely use the Tutoring again.” ★ “My tutor was great I loved it. It was easy to use and very helpful.” ★ “I like this program. I really think I learned something =)”

★ Additional support for ALL students (not just online). ★ Approximately same cost (per tutoring hour) as NetTutor and SmartThinking (based on Cortland’s student usage Spring 2013). ★ Quality Control ★ Socratic Method to encourage independent learning. ★ Grassroots effort driven by student need.

 Expand services to more colleges.  Offer support for more subjects.  Allow STAR to try out and improve upon best practices for consortia.  Covers salaries for five years to help schools become prepared to join the Consortium and improve the quality of tutoring.
