World War 2 By: Jack Dufour

The Cause of the War It all started when Adolf Hitler’s Nazi group started to take over the German Government and invade Poland. Then the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany. Now, Germany started invading other neighboring Countries to the point where the UK was the only opposing force in Europe.

Top Three Battles Of WW2 Battle of Britain If the United Kingdom was destroyed then Hitler could focus his troops on Russia. So, he sent his Luftwaffe Air Force to burn England to rubble. But, English Forces had a secret weapon, the radar. This gave the RAF(Royal Air Force) time to prepare and get planes in the air. The outcome of the battle was a British Victory Battle Of “Stalin”grad Hitler’s Armies were at an oil crisis and Stalingrad named after the person in charge, Joseph Stalin, had the perfect supply of oil. So, Hitler devised a plan to take Stalingrad by first using fighter planes to bomb the city then to send in the 6 th German Army and 4 th Panzer Division. But, Stalin’s Red Army came and this force had an advantage: Winter. They were the only force prepared for the harsh winters. The result was a Soviet victory and 200,000 Germans lost. Battle Of Midway After Pearl Harbor, Japan wanted to take the American Navy out of the Pacific Theatre. So, they choose to attack Midway and extend their defensive perimeter. This would lure in the American aircraft carriers into a fight. But, Americans had broken the Japanese Code and sent ships to protect Midway. American B-17’s found the Japanese Fleet first, under command of Admiral Nagumo, and opened fire. After the first attack and destruction of all American carriers the Japanese fleet came in for another attack. But, was attacked by 12 more aircraft carriers and a fleet of SBD Dauntless Dive Bombers. The Result was ultimate destruction of the Japanese Fleet and American Victory.

Pearl Harbor Japan surprised the American Carriers at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu. This led to America entering the War and the War in the Pacific. Fighters, Bombers, and Torpedoes launched in two waves from six aircraft carriers. The surprise attack destroyed 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, 188 aircraft, and 2,403 servicemen.

Top Ten Generals Of WW2 Allied Forces 1.George S. Patton – USA 3.Dwight D. Eisenhower- USA 4. Douglas McArthur- USA 5. Bernard Montgomery- UK 7. Henry Arnold- USA 8. Omar Bradley- USA Axis Powers 2. Erwin Rommel- Germany 6. George Zhukov- Russia 9. Erich von Manstein- Germany 10. Isoroku Yamamoto- Japan

The Atomic Bomb The Atomic Bomb was used on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The purpose of the bomb was for Japan to surrender to America and it would officially end the War. It was made by Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, and all the scientists involved in “Manhattan Project”.

D-Day D-Day or Operation Overlord was the Invasion of Normandy, France. It was the largest Invasion force of all time. Consisting of 156,000 American Troops, 5,000 ships and landing craft, 50,000 vehicles, 11,000 aircraft, and 13,000 paratroopers. The Invasion Force would be spread out on beaches Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The date of the attack was June 6, The German defenses were 6,000 mines, 12,000 hedgehogs(crossed steel beams, 5ft tall), a ft tall rock climb, barbed wire, machine gun nests, and concrete bunkers with 75 and 88mm guns. From the water to the rock climb was 200yds long. The soldiers carried 80-lbs packs, so they moved slowly. 500 tons of gallons of gasoline were needed daily for the first 20 days of fighting. The result of the fighting was 209,000 Allied casualties, 200,000 Germans killed or wounded, and 15,000-20,000 French civilians killed. There were 200,000 Axis POWs. France was liberated on August 25, 1944 and Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945.
