Imagine this … A tsunami warning has been broadcast and you are in its path. You have 5 minutes to gather up your most precious treasures and jump in the car and escape. Aside from your family members what precious household treasure will you rescue from destruction?

Today’s Lesson Today we talk about how possessions don’t last. – But your relationship with God is forever. – Jesus teaches about two kinds of treasures

Listen for the kinds of treasures we have. Matthew 6:19-21 (HCSB) “Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Invest in Eternal Treasures Jesus said not to collect earthly treasures. Why? Why is heaven a better place to "bank" than earth? What are examples of earthly treasures, heavenly treasures? EarthlyHeavenly

Invest in Eternal Treasures What does the location of a person’s treasure say about that person? Why are the heart and our treasures inseparable? How does our culture reflect the truth of Jesus’ statement in verse 21?

Invest in Eternal Treasures What are some ways people serve or actually become enslaved to their stuff? How can we "store up... treasures in heaven"?

Listen for the meaning of “the eye”. Matthew 6:22-23 (HCSB) “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness—how deep is that darkness!

Keep Your Focus Clear The eye is described as the "lamp of the body"? How is this so? What do you think causes your “eye” to be bad or good, your body to full of darkness or light? Eyes are “good”Eyes are “bad”

Keep Your Focus Clear What symptoms do we experience when we are losing our spiritual focus? What is the result of "good eyes"? We wear corrective lenses to help our physical sight. How do we improve our spiritual vision?

Listen for what is impossible. Matthew 6:24 (HCSB) “No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money.

Committed to God Alone Jesus mentioned the two “masters” of God and money. Why these two? In what ways does money try to be our master? How does it try to make us its servant or slave? Jesus makes this an “either-or” issue. Why can’t we divide our loyalties and give both masters at least some allegiance?

Committed to God Alone How does this apply in our lives when we try to satisfy both God and our own selfish desires? What kinds of action can a believer take to stay focused on the things that last?

Application Memorize – Consider Psalm 37:25 (HCSB) I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned or his children begging for bread. – Commit this verse to memory, let it strength your faith and drive out fear

Application Review – Take a look at your bank statement or purchase history for the past month. – Use this information to make a list of your priorities and major concerns – Ask God to guide you to make decisions concerning these priorities

Application Invest – One way to invest in God’s kingdom is through giving to your church. – If you haven’t been tithing, start this week. – If you are giving, take the next step and increase the percentage of your income given to the work of the Lord
