Charlie May Simon: Tournament of Titles R.E. Baker Elementary Bentonville

Why have the tournament? O Promote award winning books O Inspire students to read the CMS nominees O Implement a program to unify the 4 th graders O Promote literacy throughout the school O Motivate the students to read

Where did the idea for a CMS competition originate? O Assistant Principal, Mrs. Hurlburt, suggested some type of school book tournament. O Our neighboring middle school participates in a middle level Battle of the Books. O My first year only 20 students were eligible to vote for the CMS 2014 winner. O Through past experiences we knew that students were not checking out and reading CMS books.

First Step O Brainstormed people that would be willing to participate. O Looked for people that would make this a well rounded and represented committee. O Brittany Fleming : Library Media Specialist O Blair Ballard: 4 th Grade Literacy O Carolyn Myrick: Literacy Coach O Karen McGuirt: Reading Interventionist O Amy Hurlburt: Assistant Principal

Next Step O We divided up the books. Each committee member was responsible for reading 2 nominees. O Each committee member was responsible for creating 10 questions from their book. O We decided on a theme; March Madness. O Voting took place in March O NCAA would be going on O A fun way to promote the program

What did the students do? 1. Read the book or teacher read book 2. Take the quiz 3. Put up their basket ball 4. Voted for their favorite CMS
