A Good Presentation Tips and Advice The Presenter by Rodolfo Badilla, MSc.

I’m gonna talk about. My topic is… Your worst opening: “I’m gonna talk about.” “My topic is…” The Opening: The Opening: Engaging the audience Good attention getters are: A question An analogy A reflection An anecdote An image projected + comment or reflection A joke or funny image ( this one’s for experts only ) A piece of information taken from the news Stats from a respected source of information Use an Attention Getter. *Be original but be decent.

A GOOD PRESENTATION SHOULD HELP THE PRESENTATOR PRESENT IN A GOOD WAY. THIS IS TO SAY NOT TO REPEAT REPEATED WORDS BECAUSE REPETION IS VERY DISGUSTING. PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO READ IN A PRESENTATION. PRESENTATORS SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPEAK ABOUT THEIR TOPIC FLUENTLY WITHOUT HAVING TO READ FROM A DOCUMENT. MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT A PRESENTATION IS ONLY ABOUT STANDING UP IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE AND PRESENTING WHAT ONE KNOWS. BUT A PRESENTATION –ALSO A SPEECH- IS MUCH MORE THAN THAT. PRESENTING IS ABOUT SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH PEOPLE IN A CLEAR WAY, MAKING SURE PEOPLE ARE UNDERSTANDING AND MAKING GOOD USE OF THE TIME OF YOUR PRESENTATION. A GOOD PRESENTATION

The Basics The speaker: speaks Slides: do not speak Who is Who?

do Audio Visuals help. You do. YOU speak. They show. Who is Who?

Characteristics of a Quality Slideshow

PREPARE THOROUGHLY. - Speak fluently about the topic. You are the expert. - Reading = I’M STUPID / I DON’T KNOW! - Be ready for questions. >>> BOTTOM LINE: PREPARE THOROUGHLY. 1. DON’T READ!

- - Know your computer - Familiarize with Projector, Video Beam, Laser Pointer, etc. - Test and practice ahead of time. - Know your audience, classroom, and context. 2. MASTER YOUR TOOLS “Can someone help me with this thing please…”

3. WATCH YOUR SPELLING

The independence Of Costa Rica. Costa Rica independenced from Spain in september 15, Unlike independence in other contries, it wasn't a very significant event at the time, since this country had functioned apart from the Capitanía General of Guatemala for a long time.

3. WATCH YOUR SPELLING AND FORMAT Consistency 1. In headers, capitalize each content word, never function words. 2. Do not punctuate headers but do sentences. 3. Use the same format all across. (Font, Size, Colors) «Consistency»

3. WATCH YOUR SPELLING AND FORMAT 4. Use English. Do not make up. 5. Check spelling (15 th, Hability)

3. WATCH YOUR SPELLING AND FORMAT 6. Use pictures in original size.

How? Right-click on the picture

4. DO NOT ABUSE EFFECTS - Unless absolutely necessary - “Short but Sweet” - To the point

5. DO NOT EXCEED 15 SLIDES Less is more - Simple is best. “Less is more”. - Focus on message, not look. - Learning aches, so simplify it.

The Presenter ( You! ) 1.Dress properly. 2.Speak slowly and clear. 3.Establish eye contact or watch the wall. Don’t stay. 4.Control your hands. Use them. 5.Don’t be afraid to move (slowly across and back) 6.Speak out. NEVER Memorize. 7.Be yourself and enjoy your presentation.

«A speech is a great chance to show what you know.»

I’m finished. That’s it. Your worst closing: “I’m finished.” “That’s it.” The Closing: The Closing: Leaving Like a Boss in 3 steps By doing so: You set your idea finished. You project security and control. You wrap up the entire presentation. You get the audience’s attention. You established the truth of things. The human ear reacts to this with a sensation of completeness. 1. Lower your voice tone towards the end of your last sentence. *Be original but be decent.

The Closing: The Closing: Leaving Like a Boss in 3 steps 3. Say “Thank You”. 2. Ask if there are questions. Experts and compromised presenters care for listeners’ questions.

Q/A

Thank You!
