Engineering is a challenging and rewarding profession There are excellent job prospects and your work is likely to have plenty of variety as no one job is the same You wont be tied to a desk all day and if you are keen to go further afield then there are opportunities to work overseas You’ll get a professional qualification, including letters after your name More importantly, being an engineer will give you the opportunity to help people

You might be surprised at the range of companies who employ engineering graduates Graduates can work companies such as IBM BAE Systems Rolls-Royce Arup Shell Siemens Airbus Price Waterhouse Coopers Pfizer, Unilever Toshiba Tata Steel KPMG Ernst & Young Some engineering graduates are employed by companies outside the engineering profession such as the Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC Many of the large companies have excellent training schemes Do your research and find out local firms in your area

Mechanical Engineering (ME) – An extremely broad field Don’t be fooled by its name, it is not the engineering that deals with automobiles That title goes to automotive engineering, a branch of Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering is basically “Universal Engineering” you will learn a little bit of everything at a basic level, but will focus on: mechanic Thermodynamics fluid mechanics materials science Aerospace Engineering, the field that deals with all things that fly, is another sub discipline of ME Explore some of the recent jobs on line to give you an idea of what is around

Electrical Engineering (EE)- A broad field that has three main branches: Power Engineering Electronics Engineering Computer Engineering In general, an EE studies how electricity can be applied to provide energy. Power engineers work on large scale power systems such as power plants generators city power grids Electronics Engineers, essentially deal with small scale electronics. These engineers will work on small appliances, or other electronics devices, such as PDA's though a Computer Engineer will often be on the team for PDA's and Smart Phones. A computer engineer sounds just like what it is. Another growing field in EE is Telecommunication Engineering, which deals with designing telecommunication networks for satellite communication and GPS systems.

Civil Engineering (CE) - One of the oldest engineering disciplines. This deals with designing buildings and other structures, such as bridges and roads. Traffic engineering is a sub-discipline and deals with studying how traffic flows through intersections and designing street layouts and traffic light timers to achieve optimum efficiency. Environmental Engineering is another sub field that applies engineering concepts to protecting the environment and conserving resources.

Chemical Engineering - This field deals with synthesizing new chemical to be put to good use. It also involves studying chemical reactions and how they can be harnessed to produce energy. Petroleum Engineering is a subfield that deals with creating new fuels, which could be incredibly important considering the fact that we are running out of resources. Materials Engineering is another sub-discipline that focuses on designing new materials that can be used to create stronger an cheaper products, for example.
