Building Your Own Cumulative Dictionary Mrs. Barnett English 3 Custom Dictionary

Cumulative Dictionary Guidelines From now on, YOU will be responsible for building your own vocabulary lists. Beginning today, you will have a separate section in your notebook for any new vocabulary words you encounter during any of our readings. When you are reading and you come across a word you don’t know, write it down in your dictionary.

Guidelines continued… On your notebook paper: – Write the word – Write the definition of the word IN YOUR OWN WORDS – Write down the context in which the selection uses the word – Write your own sample sentence that uses the word ALL 4 parts must be completed to get credit for the word. NO partial credit will be given.

Example 1. A.Word: Ignominy B.Definition: It means embarrassment or shame. C.Context: In the Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne stood on the scaffold in ignominy because of her adultery. D.Sentence: I drowned in ignominy after everyone found out I lied to my best friend.

Guidelines continued… Make sure you keep this dictionary up to date, because new words maybe used on a vocabulary quizzes or tests. REMEMBER! – Any word from the reading assignments (from the unit or units covered by this dictionary) is fair game, so read carefully! – The dictionary will be picked up periodically for a grade.
