S ECOND DISCUSSION In the most important single acquisition in the hi story of modern art in Scotland, and a landmark deal for the UK, the art dealer and collector Anth ony d'Offay yesterday sold his collection of more t han 700 modern and contemporary art works to t he nation. The price was £100m less than they ar e worth on the open market. Christie's and Sothe by's have both independently judged the collectio n to be worth around £125m. The Scottish Gover nment and the Department for Culture, Media an d Sport in London have each donated £10m to bu ying the works. The National Heritage Memorial Fund is also providing £7m and the Art Fund £1 m.

S ECOND DISCUSSION Lullaby Spring - a three-metre wide steel cabinet which contains 6136 hand-crafted and painted pil ls - has sold for £9,652,000, including buyer's pre mium, to an anonymous collector at Sotherby's. a self portrait by artist Francis Bacon doubled ex pectations when it fetched more than £21m. The oil painting, which dates from 1978, had been exp ected to sell for between £8m and £12m, but fetch ed £21.58m, including the buyer's premium. The work is one of 14 large scale self portraits by the f igurative painter and the first to come to auction. The Sotherby's sale was estimated to raise betwe en £40m and £57m, but fetched £72.42m includin g premiums.
