11-2 The Economy Today Essential Question: How has South Carolina’s economy changed?

11-2 The Economy Summarize the social and economic impact of developments in agriculture, industry and technology, including the creation of Jim Crow laws, the rise and fall of textile markets, and the expansion of the railroad Explain the causes and impact of immigration from South Carolina and internal migration from rural areas to the cities, including discrimination and unemployment; poor sanitation and transportation services; and the lack of electricity and other modern conveniences in rural locations Summarize the development of economic, political, and social opportunities of African Americans in South Carolina, including the end of Jim Crow laws; the desegregation of schools (Briggs v. Elliott) and other public facilities; and efforts of African Americans to achieve the right to vote.

Resources Today South Carolina’s natural resources are important to its economy. These include its rich soil, minerals, and shellfish. The rich soil in Gaffney is good for growing peaches.

Resources Today Other resources include minerals for mining. Mineral- a natural resource that is collected by mining. One kind on mineral mined in South Carolina is kaolin. Kaolin- a white clay used to make china teacups and paper. It is also mixed with rubber to make tires, paint, and cosmetics.

Working in South Carolina Some workers in South Carolina manufacture cotton goods and carpets. Greeneville and communities around it have many factories. Here, cotton goods, carpets, yarns, and knitted goods are made.

Working in South Carolina Others provide services. Service- a job a worker does These people are workers in hospitals, schools, grocery stores, and tourism. Police officers and government officials also provide important services. Tourism is a service industry. Workers provide services for tourists at hotels, restaurants, stores, and historic sites.
