Child online safety: Getting everyone ’ s involvement Kalev Pihl

Two fold problem 1.How to involve: School, parents and children 2.How to involve: Politicians, industry and public authority representatives

Families and schools Internet gives child its freedom and privacy Kids grow up to be smarter than parents at the age of 6-9 already Parenting is not tought and learned Schools should harmonize the levels of EQ and IQ and cultural differences School is not credible educator for grown ups

School and Family On an individual level: – We started with lectures to teachers, pupils and parents

Attention You need dramatic examples!

That only covers parts of it! You still need to overcome a lot of misbeliefs You can only help if the help is asked!

Bringing together organizations

How to start? It always is about active and smart individuals with personal missions!

„Raising Awareness of Safer Internet Usage in Estonia (Targalt Internetis EE-SIC)“ The activities of the project are being implemented by five organisations: – The NPO Estonian Union for Child Welfare – The Tiger Leap foundation – The Ministry of Social Affairs, in association with the NPO Eesti Abikeskused (Estonian Help Centres) – The Police and Border Guard Board

Project support Advisory board (17 people) Youth panel (15 school children)

Results of the first year A lot of materials for kids and teachers and parents (incl. games, quizzes, cartoons) Training of educators and events in schools Tipline and helpline Events for awareness raising Cyber Police (not accepted to the project, but done anyway)

Thank you!
