Overview  Project Overview  Current State  Project Impact  Project Outcome  Long Term Vision  Significant Challenges  Report from Michigan

Project Overview The NEDSS Messaging solution (NMS) aims to establish a self- sustaining national support network that builds capacity among public health stakeholders to support electronic message exchange NMS

Current State Deployed 32 licenses of COTS tools 7 states are using it in production MSS Current version 2.2 Operations & Maintenance phase Available in Oracle & SQL version Integrated with PHIN VADS August 2008 data release Deployed CDC component with COTS in 11 States 2 in production, 5 in staging, 4 in testing phases EXECUTIVE LEVEL milestones 10 states in production with 1 or more labs using Rhapsody or MSS by end of calendar year 2008 Complete requirements for version 3.0 by end of cy 2008

Success Criteria  Establish electronic messaging capability –ELR or Case Notification  Transfer or build technical knowledge within the state or PH jurisdiction to self sustain

Project Impact Impact: “Establish the ability to receive, validate, process electronic data from multiple sources (e.g. labs, PH jurisdictions & surveillance systems, Hospital systems) and make it available to the right user in a timely manner” AreaImpact Tools  MSS  Rhapsody  PHIN MS  PHIN VADS Training  115 state & local resources  28 federal resources Technical assistance  76 technical requests  4 change requests Funding  License fee $2100 or $4200 for Rhapsody  Training & Travel Collaborative medium  Biweekly calls since 2006  Sitescape for data sharing  Dedicated webinar and phone line  distribution for technical discussions

Project Outcomes  Idaho –ELR 4 National Labs (LabCorp, Mayo, Quest, ARUP)  New Jersey –Case Notification TB case notification using PHIN messaging guide for TB vr1.0  Michigan –ELR 2 National Labs  Oklahoma –ELR 2 National Lab

Current Challenges Challenges: Lack of appropriate informatics resources to be trained at PH jurisdictions Priorities and time line of the partner organizations (labs, PH jurisdictions etc) Funding

Tomorrow's vision Public health jurisdictions establish and sustain technical capacity to support all electronic messaging ( ELR, Case Notification, Case Reporting) Shared efforts and stakeholder collaboration as a critical element in the business of public health Shared infrastructure (services) for all public health messaging (biosurveillance, Notifiable disease surveillance & others) Support open source direction when and as appropriate.
