Bell work: Puzzle (2 minutes)

Chapter 4: Birth and the Newborn Baby Belma Marie R. Aquino February

Student Learning Outcomes: ➢ Describe the three stages of childbirth, the baby’s adaptation to labor and delivery, and the newborn baby’s appearance. ➢ List common medical interventions during childbirth and evaluate the circumstances that justify their use and dangers that are associated with each ➢ Examine the value and impact of close parent- infant contact shortly after birth. ➢ Describe typical changes in the family after the birth of a new baby, along with interventions that foster the transition to parenthood.

Warm-up: Brainstorm ➢ In one group, brainstorm what you know about childbirth. Make sure everyone has something to share. ➢ (5 minutes)

The 3 stages of Childbirth ➢ Stage 1: Dilation and Effacement of the Cervix

Stage 2: Delivery of the Baby

Stage 3: Birth of the Placenta

Activity: ➢ Go to your assigned group. ➢ In your groups, create a poster that explains the stage given to you. (5 minutes) ➢ Group 1--> Stage 1 ➢ Group 2--> Stage 2 ➢ Group 3--> Stage 3 ➢ Be prepared to share.

The Baby’s adaptation ➢ The force of contractions increases the baby’s production of stress hormones. ➢ Some stresses they go through: ➢ Temporary oxygen reduction ➢ Pressure of the contractions ➢ Arouses the infant into alertness

The Newborn Baby’s Appearance ➢ The average newborn is 20 inches long and 7 ½ pounds. ➢ Boys tend to be slightly longer and heavier than girls. ➢ The head is large in comparison to the trunk and legs.

The Apgar Scale

Medical Interventions ➢ Labor inducing drugs and surgical techniques have been discovered. ➢ Fetal Monitoring ➢ Labor and Delivery Medication (epidural) ➢ Instrument Delivery (forceps, vacuum) ➢ Induced Labor ➢ Cesarean Delivery

Types of Medical Interventions

Activity 2: Skit ➢ You are going to be divided into three groups. In your groups you are going to create a skit about your given medical intervention using the following idea: (5 minutes) ➢ A couple is having their first baby. Being curious about the interventions during childbirth, they seek a professional doctor/doctors to find out about these interventions. (show how they are used in your skit)

Groups ➢ Group 1: Fetal Monitoring ➢ Group 2: Labor and Delivery Medications ➢ Group 3: Instrument Delivery ➢ Group 4: Induced Labor ➢ Group 5: Cesarean Delivery

Precious moments after birth ➢ Bonding or feelings of affection and concern for the infant.

Transition to Parenthood ➢ Changes in the family system. ➢ Single-mother families ➢ Parent Interventions

Changes in the family system ➢ Constant care giving ➢ Added financial responsibilities ➢ Less time for couples to devote to one another ➢ Mild declines in relationship satisfaction and communication quality

Single mother families ➢ Nearly 39 percent of babies in the U.S are born to single mothers, 1/3 are teenagers (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2009b) ➢ Planned births and adoptions by single women are increasing. These mothers are generally financially secure, have readily available social support from family and friends, and adapt to parenthood with relative ease.

Parent Interventions ➢ Special interventions are available to help parents adjust to life with a new baby. ➢ For those who are not at high risk for problems, counselor led groups focusing on couple and adjustment and parenting skills are highly effective (Glade, Bean, & Vira, 2005;Petch &Halford,2008)

Activity 3: ➢ You will be given a partner. ➢ I will assign a section for you and your partner to read. (5 minutes) ➢ Present the important information about your section.

➢ Describe the three stages of childbirth, the baby’s adaptation to labor and delivery, and the newborn baby’s appearance. ➢ List common medical interventions during childbirth and evaluate the circumstances that justify their use and any dangers that are associated with each. ➢ Examine the value and impact of close parent-infant contact shortly after birth. ➢ Describe typical changes in the family after birth of a new baby, along with interventions that foster the transition to parenthood.
