DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION MODEL Addie Rose Bullock and Madison Henry

DEFINITION A model that shows the process of change in a society's population from a condition of high crude birth and death rates and low rate of natural increase to a condition of low crude birth and death rates, low rate of natural increase, and a higher total population.

STAGE 1 CBR and CDR are both high. Lack of clean water Inefficient sewage. Shortages of food. The death rates fluctuates wildly. No countries in this stage

STAGE 2 CBR stays high CDR drops very low High natural rate of increase Improvements in water, food, sewage, and hygiene Agricultural Revolution/better farming practices Every country in the world is at least at Stage 2

STAGE 2 EXAMPLE

STAGE 3 Declines in birth rates Drop in IMR (Infant Mortality Rate) Increased female literacy and rights Postponement of marriage

STAGE 3 EXAMPLE

STAGE 4 Careers for women Postponed marriage/ childbirth DINK’s (Dual Income No Kids) is much more common lifestyle choice CBR and CDR very low and approaching zero Total population very high

STAGE 4 EXAMPLE
