thermometer (n) - an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature Example: The thermometer outside the school said that the temperature was 15 degrees below zero, so we had the day off!

geothermal (adj) – of, relating to, or produced by the internal heat of the earth Example: Investors in geothermal energy projects are exploring the potential to generate carbon.

thermostat (n) - a device that automatically regulates temperature Example: I had to adjust the thermostat in this classroom because the air felt as balmy and stagnant as the jungles of Vietnam!

thermal (adj) - of or relating to heat Example: After an hour and a half of pampering, including a massage and hair treatment, I took a dip in the thermal pools.

Thermos (Proper noun) - a container that keeps a drink or other fluid hot or cold by means of a double wall enclosing a vacuum Example: I used a Thermos to bring my coffee and chicken noodle soup to school for lunch; my food stayed warm the whole day!

Latin: dict– to speak dictionary contradict diction verdict predict

dictionary (n) - a book that lists the words of a language in alphabetical order and gives their meaning Example: The students used an old-school Webster’s dictionary to search for the definitions to their Word Study words.

contradict (v) - assert the opposite of a statement made by someone Example: Mayella Ewell tried to contradict Tom Robinson’s statement that he was trying to help her move a chiffarobe by stating he raped her.

diction (n) – the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing Example: Harper Lee’s diction in To Kill a Mockingbird mimics the accent, idioms, and racism that existed in Alabama in the 1930s.

verdict (n) – an opinion or judgment Example: In To Kill a Mockingbird, the jury’s verdict concluded that Tom Robinson was guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, which angered Jem, who believed the evidence showed Tom’s innocence.

predict (v) – to say or estimate that (a specified thing) will happen in the future Example: Who do you predict will win the next presidential race for 2016?

General Vocabulary counter argument (n) – a contrasting, opposing, or refuting argument Example: A counter argument to not wearing uniforms in school is that uniforms prevent jealousy among students because all students have the same clothing.

logical argument (n)– a course of reasoning aimed at demonstrating a truth or falsehood Example: Make a logical argument about whether or not social media is good form of entertainment for the youth of America.
