Integrated Curriculum Plan Math & Language Arts Amber Dundas 2 nd grade – Perimeter

Lesson Goals  To integrate literature into mathematics curriculum  To introduce the concept of perimeter  Use hands on activities to develop an understanding of the content  Review measurement and measuring tools  Students will understand how to find perimeter measuring to the nearest cm or inch  Students will describe real life situations involving measurement

NCTM Standards - Measurement  recognize the attributes of length, volume, weight, area, and time  compare and order objects according to these attributes  understand how to measure using nonstandard and standard units  select an appropriate unit and tool for the attribute being measured Mathematical Practices 1.Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

Common Core State Standards SubjectCCSS Number CCSS Narrative Measurement and Data 2.MD.1Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes. Measurement and Data 2.MD.3Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. Measurement and Data 2.MD.4Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.

Grade Level Content Expectations SubjectGLCE’s Number GLCE Narrative Language Arts R.CM.02.04apply significant knowledge from grade-level science, social studies, and mathematics texts Language Arts R.MT.02.02self-monitor comprehension by using strategies including constructing mental images, visually representing ideas in text, and asking questions before, during, and after reading. Language Arts R.MT.02.01self-monitor comprehension by recognizing when meaning is breaking down and use strategies including making credible predictions to increase comprehension when reading or listening to text. Language Arts R.AT.02.01be enthusiastic about reading and learning how to read. Language Arts W.HW.02.01fluently and legibly write upper and lower case manuscript letters and begin to write the cursive alphabet. Language Arts W.AT.02.01be enthusiastic about writing and learning to write. Mathematics M.UN Measure lengths in meters, centimeters, inches, feet, and yards approximating to the nearest whole unit and using abbreviations: cm, m, in, ft, yd. Mathematics M.PS Compare lengths; add and subtract lengths (no conversion of units). Mathematics M.TE Determine perimeters of rectangles and triangles by adding lengths of sides, recognizing the meaning of perimeter.*

Materials  Book – “Spaghetti and Meatballs for All!”  Ruler  Meter stick  Measuring tape (for each set of partners)  Templates (for each set of partners)  Math Journals  Pencils  Paper – worksheets, cm. grid paper  Smartboard  Whiteboard – dry erase marker  Boxes (provided by students)  Projector

Procedures  Discuss perimeter on the carpet with entire class  Perimeter – use the words “ rim ” and “ meter ” to explain that perimeter means to measure around an object  Read book, “Spaghetti and Meatballs for All!”, written by Marilyn Burns to help introduce the concept of perimeter

Procedures (cont.)  Discuss major concepts about perimeter from the book  Use Smartboard to count the perimeter for different boxes

Procedures (cont.)  Discuss using appropriate measuring tools with class  Rulers, meter sticks, and measuring tape  Students will complete page 216 in their daily math journals  Use measuring tape to measure their partners head, neck, calf, and bicep

Procedures (cont.)  Once most of the children are finished, use the overhead projector, to model how to trace the shape of their box onto grid paper  NOTE: Each student has already brought in 2 different shaped boxes, if they do not have one, they can use a crayon box, pencil box, etc.  Students will continue finishing the previous worksheet and begin working with their box and grid paper to find the perimeter in centimeters

Procedures (cont.)  Students will complete worksheet about perimeter and measuring tools when finished with previous assignments  If students finish early, they can read a book quietly or work in their math journals
