Carmine DiCenso Working in Animal Welfare since 1996 Worked in Human Services prior to working in AW Have worked for the MSPCA & Animal Rescue League of Boston Executive Director of PARL since November of 2011 Love Geek Stuff!!

Mike Keiley Worked in animal welfare since 1994, all at Nevins Farm Has been the Director of the Noble Family Adoption Center since 2003 Much cooler than Carmine

Goals for Today Explore the role of people in animal welfare Share ideas on how to work positively with people Challenges Culture of Compassion Questions/ Discussion

Not Customer Service Smile Acknowledgement "Supplying" people with what they want What does it look like one step beyond Collaborative?

Study Study conducted in 2005 by NCSP Negative Experience with Animal Welfare Agency -80% of Surrenders -65% of Adopters Are we surprised by these results?

Why Are People Important?

MSPCA & PARL MSPCA Organization philosophy Animals inherently make people’s lives better We help animals by helping people PARL Organizational Philosophy Promote People & Animals Message People and Animals Deserve Kindness & Compassion

Challenges

What you bring to the table Body Language Tone Negatives Closed Ended Questions Exceptions vs Rule Policy Baggage

Facing Challenges Self-Evaluation / Peer-Evaluation Don't beat yourself up – mistakes will be made Stress Reduction Now when to pass the baton – sometimes Humor, not taking ourselves so seriously

Facing Challenges Learning from those that came before us Thinking but not knowing Careful about Language – “People Suck” Respecting others with different POV and opinions

Adoption Conversations not applications Matchmaking not approvals Looking for people who will make good decisions for the animal as life changes, not “forever homes” Reward people for wanting to adopt Remember you were them at one point

Surrender A Service Offered Be Sensitive to Emotional State (your own and the clients) Information Gathering Listen– Offer Assistance but be aware of needs

Closing Thoughts Try not to predetermine outcomes Know your triggers be aware of them so they don't effect your judgment Being humane is not reserved for animals We can show and provide care, compassion and resepct for BOTH people and animals.
