DO FIRST… LABEL YOUR TABLE of CONTENTS and the TOP OF YOUR PAGE. 4. (bottom) 9/8/ DFQ – NON-FICTION - Where do YOU find out information on what’s going on in the world? - What TYPES of information do YOU like the read about? (3 minutes) -----

Non-Fiction (essential questions)  What is Non-Fiction?  Why is Non-Fiction important?  What are the FIVE (5) TYPES of NON-FICTION?

Non-Fiction

Non-Fiction (noun) Writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people such as biography, history, or current events.

Sequence Comparison/ Contrasting Cause & Effect Fact & Opinion Problem/Solution 5 TYPES!

Sequence Non-fiction text told in the order that it does or should happen Examples: A history or social studies book (timelines!) A recipe (step-by-step) 1,2,3,4…etc First, Then, Next, Last… In 1984, Mr. Barrie was born. In 2015, he Became king of the universe.

Tells how two things are alike and different Example: A newspaper article comparing and contrasting two restaurants. Drake vs Meek Millz. Compare & Contrast

Evidence of causes and effects will be given. Example: Jenny didn’t tie her laces. Jenny fell in her face, spilling her food in front of the whole cafeteria. Cause & Effect

Gives facts about a certain topic then provides the author’s opinion about that topic Example: A researcher finds all she can about the Titanic then comes up with her own hypothesis or comments on findings along the way. Fact & Opinion

Problems and solutions will be described Example: an author uses questions to introduce new ideas or topics then answers them. Climate Control…etc. Problem/Solution

Read the following slides and see if you can determine which kind of text structure is being used… Try for Yourself

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet. 2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf. 3. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 30 to 50 minutes. You may continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes

Sequence Problem and Solution Compare and Contrast Cause and Effect Fact and Opinion Which ONE?

ANSWER: If you said SEQUENCE, you’re right!

INDEPENDENTLY … Match the brief write up with the ‘Non-Fiction’ Type. When you are finished, hand it in to the bin at the front of the class.
