Multimedia Multimedia explores photography both digital and film. Students learn to manipulate images in the darkroom and on the computer with Adobe Photoshop.

Symphonic Band Mr. Thomas Langford The Sumter High School Symphonic Band is the Intermediate Level Band performing music at a grade IV level. The ensemble is comprised of students from 9th-12th grade. In the school year two students were placed in the Region Five SCBDA Honor Band. This year at the SCBDA Concert Festival, the ensemble received an Excellent rating for their performance. Two students from the ensemble also attended SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Festival and both received the rating of Superior.

The AP program in studio art is intended for highly motivated students who are interested in seriously pursuing the study of art. The AP program is a cooperative endeavor that helps high school students prepare for college-level courses. Students who successfully complete the AP Studio Art are eligible for college credit upon passing the AP portfolio. Students should be prepared to participate in a challenging curriculum based on the DBAE model of art education. DESCRIPTION: Ceramics is designed to present hand building techniques such as the pinch and coil methods through a cultural approach. Aesthetic perception, creative expression and art appreciation are incorporated units. Students process clay to create three-dimensional art forms of their own designs. They use appropriate glazing methods to create the finished artistic clay objects. The development of a unique and artistic style requires the mature student to independently create a variety of functional and nonfunctional works of art.

ART 3 & 4 Art 3 Honors CREDIT(S): 1 DURATION: Semester HW GRADE(S): 10, 11, 12 PREREQUISITES(S): A “B” or above in Art I and Art II and teacher approval. The intent of the course is to recognize the need for visual art students to work independently and to pursue advanced visual art concepts. The course provides more in depth work to move beyond surface exploration. The course seeks to encourage the kind of search that is most comparable to that encountered by the artist working independently in the studio. The content of the course includes components of aesthetic valuing, aesthetic perception, creative expression, and historical and cultural aspects. Ms. Rennick’s Art Class Sumter High School I earned my B.A. in studio art and English Literature from Hope College, and my M.F.A in Sculpture from The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!). I love teaching and making art, and love my students here at Sumter High School! (Go Gamecocks!) This year we showed our work and won awards at the Sumter County Fair, the Oktoberfest Art Show in the Thompson Building, the Youth Month Art Show at Tapp’s in downtown Columbia, and participated in the Festival of Trees at Tuomey Hospital and the Earth Day Festival at Swan Lake! I currently teach Art I, Art II, and Sculpture. In Art class we focus on: being creative, working hard, learning a lot, & having serious fun!

Chorus The Sumter High School choral program has a long tradition of excellence and of visibility in the Sumter area. The program currently serves over 85 students in two classes with several different performing ensembles and is growing. There are the Freshmen and Varsity Women’s Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir, Concert Choir and Gospel Choir just to name a few. In this program, we accept students of all musical experience. If a student is completely new to reading and performing music, there is a chorus group that caters to starting with the basics –or chorus I or freshmen women. For those who have an advanced background in the area, chamber choir or chorus IV is best. Each year, the choir personnel change. Due to this fact, not every year will each student be given his or her preference of choir to be placed. All choir members are subject to an audition and entry into the group is at the discretion of the director. While there are groups that focus mostly on contest and competition (chorus III and IV and chamber choir), ensembles such as Show Choir and Gospel Choir meet after school and are not a part of the academic spectrum. These, however, are very visible in the community and require equal dedication.

Sumter High Orchestra The Sumter High Orchestra is one of the most up-and-coming programs in South Carolina. With over 50 students now involved in the organization, the SHO continuously has a solid representation at both region- and state-wide events including Lowcountry Region Orchestra, SCMEA Concert Festival, and South Carolina All-State Orchestra. Many SHO students are also involved in REACH Strings, an after-school enrichment program that seeks to further develop its members through in-depth study of repertoire and mentor/mentored opportunities with younger players. The SHO is very involved in the community and has performed in numerous events and locations in the area. Students have also had the opportunity to visit places outside the community, including trips to see the SC Philharmonic, Greenville Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra. The Sumter High Orchestra is under the direction of Mr. Erik Hines and Ms. Noelle Saleh.

Wind Ensemble and Concert Band Mr. Marc Kaufman The Sumter High School Wind Ensemble is the most advanced band at our school, performing music at a grade V level. The ensemble is comprised of students from 9th-12th grade. In the school year twenty students were placed in the Region Five SCBDA Honor Band, more than any other band in our region. This year at the SCBDA Concert Festival, the ensemble received a Superior rating, with a perfect score, for their performance. Ten students from the ensemble also attended SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Festival and all received the rating of Superior. The Sumter High School Concert Band is the entry level ensemble, performing music at the grade III level. Concert band prepares students for the more advanced level bands by providing a good foundation in all areas of musicianship.

Theatre Arts 1 consists of a foundation in the theatre arts. Improvisation, pantomime, comedic and dramatic acting, and musical theatre are explored. T.A. 2 students mount and produce a one-act comedy and explore playwriting and technical theatre as well.
