Adding Integers

Using Two Coloured Counters We can model integer addition with tiles. Represent -2 with the fewest number of tiles Represent +5 with the fewest number of tiles.

Write the number sentence that is illustrated =

Use your red and yellow tiles to find each sum = ? + = = - 5

= ? + = = = ? = = + 1

Using a Number Line Start at zero (0) When the number is positive count to the right. When the number is negative count to the left. +-

(-4) =+2

(-5) =-2

(-7) = -4

(+7) =+4

(+8) = +6

(+3) = -2

(+2) = -3

(-2) = -6

(-3) = -5

(-4) =-5

(-1) = -5

=5

=5

=6

Integer Addition Rules Rule #1 Signs the Same, Ignore signs Add the numbers Put sign back in the answer = = -14

Rule #2 Signs Different Ignore signs Subtract the smaller number from the larger number Put the sign of the larger number with your answer (+5) = = 4 Larger number Answer = - 4

Solve the Problems = = (+3) + (+4) = = = =

Solve These Problems = = (+3) + (-4) = = = -2 5 – 3 = – 9 = 0 9 – 5 = 4 7 – 6 = 1 4 – 3 = 1 7 – 4 = 3
