The term “radical cataloging” emerged in early 2002 with the creation of an list called RADCAT to discuss the politics of cataloging. (Roberto, 2002) Radical cataloging covers these areas: Cataloging rules Subject headings Radical collections Cataloging to further a cause

“Those information professionals who compile, revise, apply and use these bibliographic instruments, are themselves moral beings with definite beliefs, attitudes, values and world views.” (Dick, 1995) Sanford Berman Hope A. Olson K. R. Roberto

Be user-focused… locally Balance skepticism with proactive improvements Value all kinds of cataloging Recognize the limits of traditional standards Be passionate! (Roberto, 2008) Source:

Beyond Berman: shifting away from addressing “thesaurus problems” to structural problems: Hierarchies of sameness Permanency Proposed solutions Local classification Technological innovations Teaching the radical catalog (Drabinski 2008)

 Who: dedicated catalogers, volunteers, and librarians  Where: academic libraries typically collect zines on topic(s): Popular Culture, Feminism, Comics & Graphic Novels  When: time permitting, catalogers often go through entirely  How: usually in-house cataloging practices by larger institutions, use mixture of Library of Congress and local  What: shelved alphabetically, possibly in comic book sleeves  Why: successfully sought out by those who identified as educators: access to granular or thematic academic research

 Grassroots, Community, and Student based efforts: Colleges and Universities with student-run zine and comics club: Barnard, Oberlin’s Cat in the Cream Café, Numerous Women’s Centers  BC Zine Library with local scope and students: Comment from student visiting exhibition  “It reminds me of my own scrapbooking hobby. The ritual of collecting words and photos and compiling them together in something tangible far exceeds blogging in my opinion (I know many people my age would disagree), and it feels like something that's truly of my own creation."  Zines in the Archives: status as urban historical documents, preserve physical evidence of radical print culture  Open Stack Zine Collections: Barnard Zine Library, Sarah Lawrence College, Bowling Green State University, Brooklyn College
