Prone Position Upper view Side view On outside of elbow: Arm looks straight from above Side view spine and shoulders form “T”. Torso 15-25° off line of fire Relaxed, same height in shoulders Cheek relaxed, on cheek bone Eye close to sight, not touching Leg parallel to rifle barrel Fingers relaxed. Stock on thumb pad of hand Leg out 45° from other leg Chest off ground Elbow’s ~ 90° Foot relaxed, not flexed or extended Wrist curve’s fingers towards target

Natural Alignment Get into best possible position Relax body Aim on target Close eye’s (or glance to side) Cycle through breath pattern Open eyes Adjust position if needed by Limit movement necessary for correction: Smaller correction: feet and legs Larger movement: Adjust hips/legs/feet (side to side or front/back). Pivot from left elbow and maintain “T” shaped torso. Everything above hips (elbow, cheek, shoulder etc.) should be established before NA with position built around them. Limit movement needed to naturally align.

Standing Position Hips pushed toward target. Rifle over base of support. Arm relaxed, elbow up Hips perpendicular to firing line Shoulders relaxed, butt hook in armpit Vertical forearm, upper arm tight against left side of chest Foot slight point to target Back foot slightly in front of left (body open to target) Wide stance (shoulder width). Even weight through both legs/feet. Good hip contact

Back arched so centre of gravity over base of support Elbow slightly out Head slight reach to sight Eye close to sight (<10cm) Right hand lightly gripping rifle Wrists straight Stock supported between pointer and middle finger, with thumb

Position set-up Prone Enter mat/lane at appropriate spot Standing Enter mat/lane at appropriate spot Find middle of lane Find foot placement to build position from Rifle off back Clip in Butt hook into arm pit Find solid bone to bone contact through body Prone Enter mat/lane at appropriate spot Need to be in middle of lane with rifle barrel over edge of firing line On knee’s Poles to side Rifle off Clip in Sling in Place elbow Rifle tight into shoulder Adjust position with NA’s Set-up procedure: Must be efficient and smooth (Smooth = Fast) Must be the same sequence of movements each time. Watch target while setting up to narrow focus As eye moves into sight, focus is narrowed further to first individual target * Possible scenario: Might need to find flat ground

T2 (junior boy/girls) position set-up Set-up procedure: Must be efficient and smooth (Smooth = Fast) Must be the same sequence of movements each time. After sling is on move gaze to first target you will NA on while bringing sight to eye (D) As eye moves into sight, focus is narrowed further to first individual target (D) Once NA perfect, move to E for first shot Prone Enter mat/lane at appropriate spot Need to be in middle of lane with rifle barrel over edge of firing line Onto belly Place elbow Clip in Sling in Put rifle butt plate tight into shoulder Adjust position with NA’s

Trigger Control Trigger on pad of pointer finger, near first joint Must hold first stage early during breathing pattern. Once athlete is holding breath on target they gradually increase the force on the trigger. The moment the sight picture is perfect, the shot is released with the easy application of the remaining force. This is a smooth squeezing action. The finger is the only part of the body to move, the rest of the body must remain quiet (wormy). Athlete should always practice with the same gloves they will use in the winter or some athletes cut a hole in their winter gloves to expose the tip of the finger when shooting.

Follow-Through Once trigger is squeezed there is a certain amount of time before the bullet exits the muzzle: Lock and sprint time: time for firing pin to hit shell of bullet Ignition time: time to ignite and burn gun powder Travel time: time for bullet to travel through barrel Although total time is short second, any disturbance of the shooting position 0.5-1.0 seconds after shot will effect the bullet’s trajectory.

Follow-Through cont. Follow through both physical and psychological. Physical: Maintain relaxed body position, hold trigger down and watch (with eye) bullet hit target. Once sights move back to target you evaluate (i.e. are they aiming on target still?). Psychological: Evaluate shot before preparing for next. If shot missed and/or sights off after shot, why? And adjust for next shot. Once finished shot, athlete will work the bolt without disruption to the shooting position. Good shooters sights will not stray from the target during bolting.
