End of the internship PARTI Meeting September 11, 2008 A. Shemyakin, M. Bruce

Last week  Finalize your work  The best way is to leave a written summary of your work If it is a note in a publicly – accessible database, you can refer to it later as a proof of your successful internship Non-documented work will be most likely lost. If you care about usefulness of your work, write down the results.  Don’t hope to continue this work after you return to Russia You will have your studies, jobs, friends etc. It will be very difficult to switch your mind back to Fermilab’s work  Don’t count on the last day The last day at Fermilab will be busy with other things  Check at the 4 th floor where your W-2 form will be sent to  It should be a safe and reliable place The form contains SSN You have to attach it to your tax return

Last day  In the morning, go to the Key & ID office and get a check list  Follow instructions in the check list  Return the bicycles to TD  Turn in keys for your room  Check with Margie that your transportation to the airport has been arranged

Tax return  You need to file a tax return before April 15, 2009  You will receive your W-2 form in the first half of Feb 2009 If you don’t have it by Feb 15, contact Fermilab  Both federal and state tax returns need to be filed  Previous students filled in either 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ  Forms and instructions can be found at  For an introduction, look at nr-ez.aspx  Some students had their refunds directly deposited to their US bank accounts  If you plan to do so, check with the bank what is its account closing policy, what they charge for withdrawing money abroad etc.

Feedback  We would appreciate if you can let us know when you arrive back to your home universities  Please fill in a survey about tours and lectures  Will be sent to you next week  It will help us to improve them in future  If possible, tell us what places you found interesting while visiting them (outside of Fermilab) We will pass the information for students that will come next year  Help with advertising the program  We will try to print posters with the program announcement and send them out in December 2008 or as soon as the decision about continuation of the program into 2009 is made  Keep in touch!
