Provide energy when carbohydrate and fat intake are inadequate. Produce compounds such as neurotransmitters, fibrin, and collagen. Acts as enzymes and hormones. Maintains acid-base balance. Considered macronutrients found in a wide variety of foods. They contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Proteins are made from a combination of building blocks called amino acids.(which mean they contain nitrogen)

Amino Acids 20 amino acids in our body and 9 are considered essential (cannot be produced in our bodies). Digestion of Protein When protein reaches stomach, Pepsin is formed(protein digesting enzyme).
