Introducing a new Working with the Pharmaceutical Industry Policy Phillipa Hobson-Ellyatt Health & Wellbeing Governance and Assurance Manager, Public Health, North East Lincolnshire Council Adele Calvard Healthcare Services Manager, Boehringer Ingelheim

Background Public Health have worked with the Pharmaceutical Industry since The Council currently has no position paper or clear guidelines for working with the pharmaceutical industry This policy gives the council the opportunity to work with pharmaceutical companies on a variety of projects

Aim To provide clear guidelines on how we should be working with the pharmaceutical industry across North East Lincolnshire.

Objectives To develop strong transparent partnership working with the pharmaceutical industry To encourage more joint working partnerships with the pharmaceutical industry to improve health and wellbeing of residents in North East Lincolnshire To support Council staff who have not worked with pharmaceutical companies previously To adopt the partnership policy framework To identify areas for investment within North East Lincolnshire To provide knowledge exchange between the council and commercial industry

Benefits to Residents Care closer to home More equitable and consistent care and access to care Improving the wellbeing of people living with long term conditions Enabling patients to have good health and wellbeing Promoting positive health messages Better information about conditions and treatment options Clearer and improved care pathways

Benefits to Council Better health outcomes for residents in North East Lincolnshire Better use of resources, greater value for money, lower costs Achieve health objectives in line with the health and wellbeing strategy and Council Plan Targeting specific areas with worst health outcomes Focus on prevention rather than cure Reducing burden on carers and social services Utilising resources and funding to educate frontline health staff

Benefits to the Pharmaceutical Industry Better understanding of customers’ and patients’ needs Appropriate use and dispensing of medicines or products Improved reputation for pharmaceutical companies A better understanding of the social care environment especially Health and Wellbeing boards Create new relationships with stakeholders responsible for improving public health Commercially growing the market

Feedback from Dr Charles De Wet, Medical Director, Boehringer Ingelheim ‘I believe the North East Lincolnshire Council has managed to develop an excellent policy/template for Joint Working with the Pharmaceutical Industry which incorporates all the guidance issued by the Department of Health and the ABPI and provides a clear structure and process for all parties involved to follow. Boehringer Ingelheim would be very happy to enter into future partnership projects based on this draft policy’.

Feedback from Naima Khondkar, Deputy Section Head-Pharmaceutical Industry Policy, Department of Health ‘The Department of Health is very supportive of this policy and believe you may be the first Council to create a policy of this kind. It is a ground breaking policy that shows a commitment to working with the pharmaceutical industry and encouraging joint working to achieve mutually agreed predetermined health goals for mutual benefit’.

Any Questions?
