Whiteboard activity- naming alkenes and isomerism Name the compound below including E/Z notation. Draw the displayed formula of Z-but-2-ene. What structural feature of but-2-ene allows it to exist as geometrical isomers?

Whiteboard activity- naming alkenes and isomerism Name the compound below. Draw a geometrical isomer of 3-methyl hex-2-ene.

Which of the three pairs of compounds are two geometrical isomers? Use E/Z notation to name the two geometrical isomers in B). A) B) C) Name compound A. Name compound C.

Whiteboard activity- naming alkenes and isomerism Draw the structures of Z-pent-2-ene and E-pent-2-ene.

Addition polymers- what can you work out? Plastics are examples of addition polymers that are formed in a free radical addition mechanism. Poly(ethene) and poly(propene) are examples shown below: Question 1- C-C and C-H bonds are very strong. A) Suggest the impact this has on the reactivity and durability of addition polymers. B) Explain the disadvantage of your answer to A). How are addition polymers formed? Poly(ethene) Poly(propene) n n Question 2- The reactions show how the polymers are formed from their alkene monomers. Use the diagrams to explain what happens when the alkene monomers react to form a polymer.

How are addition polymers formed from monomers? Example- forming poly(ethene) from ethene Describe what happens during the reaction. The mechanism is free radical addition mechanism (you don’t need to learn the details of this mechanism!)

Repeating units from monomers You need to draw the repeating unit of a polymer given the monomer & vice-versa. Example- forming poly(but-1-ene) from but-1-ene Repeating unit

Repeating units from monomers 1) Give the repeating unit of poly(chloroethene). Repeating unit Alkene monomer/s 2) A) Name the alkene monomer. B) Give the name and repeating unit of the addition polymer from its monomer. Repeating unit Alkene monomer

Repeating unit Alkene monomer Repeating unit Alkene monomer 3) The compound H2C=CHCN is used in the formation of acrylic polymers. Draw the repeating unit of the polymer formed from this compound. Repeating unit Alkene monomer 4) The alkene (E)-but-2-enenitrile is used to make acrylic plastics. The structure of (E)-but-2-enenitrile is Draw the formula of (Z)-but-2-enenitrile and the repeating unit it forms. Repeating unit Alkene monomer

5) Deduce the repeating units of the polymers formed from Z-pent-2-ene and E-pent-2-ene. How did you do? Mark your answers. Identify one thing you have done well. Identify one thing you can improve on.

Monomers from repeating units A) Draw the structure and name the monomer used to make the polymers below. Include E/Z notation if relevant. B) Give the IUPAC name of the polymer. Alkene monomer Repeating unit Alkene monomer Repeating unit

Alkene monomer Repeating unit Alkene monomer Repeating unit 2) Draw the structure and name the monomer used to make the polymer below. Include Z/E notation if relevant. Alkene monomer Repeating unit 3) Draw the structure and name the monomer used to make the polymer below. Include Z/E notation if relevant. Alkene monomer Repeating unit

Alkene monomer Alkene monomer 4) Draw the structure and name the monomer used to make the polymer below. Include Z/E notation if relevant. Alkene monomer 5) Draw the structure of the monomer used to make poly(phenylethene). Alkene monomer
