Helene Felice Team: Dan Cheng, Daryl Horler, Paul Bish, Hugh Highley and Nate Liggins Thank you to Paolo Ferracin, Gianluca Sabbi and Franck Borgnolutti for fruitful discussions on target definition HQ02b Preload Increase - Summary

HQ02a Assembly Targets Choice made of a conservative Azimuthal target preload ~ 200 T/m In agreement with short sample prediction Target Preload at 300 K:  shell / pole = 863  -450   shell / pole = 66 /-63 MPa Target Preload at 4.2 K:  shell / pole = 1905  -720   shell / pole = 169 / -147 MPa Axial Preload in agreement with previous HQ assemblies  z rod = 60 / 160 MPa  z rod = 880  / 2000  Axial preload was never an issue in HQ 12/12/2013H. Felice2 Mid-plane quenches HQ01 experience

Proposal from 11/27/2013 meeting Assumption based on training behavior: lack of preload starting at 15 kA Spread among coils is very likely (seen during initial HQ02a preloading) Conservative approach would be: HQ02a (ref) Option1a 4.2 K Iss Option 1b 1.9 K Iss  shell MPa PreloadkA15 (ref) GradientT/m Peak  in coil at cold 3D baseline MPa Peak  in coil at cold w more interception MPa Peak  at 206 T/m 3D baseline (intercept) MPa-190 (-170)-203 (-185)-220 (-205) Shim mm 390 (ref)590 (+200)890 (+500) Additional shim in milsmils /12/2013H. Felice3 Target: 200 MPa at cold

Target and shim definition for HQ02b HQ02a Pre test 300 K HQ02a2 post test 300 K Target HQ02b 4.2 K Target HQ02b 300 K   shell  ~ 1300  z shell  1007~ 10   shell MPa Virgin coils Computed based on training behavior   measured during HQ02a cool-down  z remains ~ constant during loading   = 615  From model and measurements 57  mil ~ 10  mils Shim increase by ~ 10 mils (250  m) 12/12/2013H. Felice4

Increase preload on 12/09/2013 Target: 10 mils per quadrant Added in 12 steps: 3 mils per quadrant : 4 steps 4 mils per quadrant: 4 steps Bladder pressure HQ02a: up to 3000 PSI (21 MPa) HQ02b: from 3300 to 5200 PSI (36 MPa) 12/12/2013H. Felice5

HQ02b Shell measured strain after load increase 1270  +/- 105 Target ~ 1300  -10  +/- 53 Azimuthal strainAxial strain Shell azimuthal strain on target at room temperature 12/12/2013H. Felice6

HQ02b Shell measured stress after load increase Azimuthal stress 100 MPa +/- 10 Target: 98 MPa 33 MPa +/- 6 Shell azimuthal stress on target at room temperature 12/12/2013H. Felice7 Axial stress

Pole SG data Coil pole SG seem to be measuring at room temperature Coil pole average before loading -343  +/- 199 To be compared to HQ02a post loading: -403  +/ /12/2013H. Felice8 SG seems reliable at room temperature

Pole SG data Coil pole SG seem to be measuring at room temperature Coil pole average before loading -343  +/- 199 To be compared to HQ02a post loading: -403  +/ /12/2013H. Felice9 SG seems reliable at room temperature and responsive to load   = 259  -26  /mil Model predicts -30  /mil SG issue might come from Temperature compensation

Summary HQ02b has an increased preload wrt HQ02a-a2 Preload target redefined based on training performance Target reached during assembly By addition of 10 mils / 250 microns shims SG seems to be reliable at room temperature Spread in coil remains large Temperature compensation is in question 12/12/2013H.
