Why create it though??? Americans (Manifest Destiny) rapidly increased population in present day Wash. & Oreg. The British Population hasn’t increased in the area. This scared the British into action Created in 1848 (4 years after Oregon Territory divided)

Why Create it Though? 1858 GOLD RUSH happened… (Ten years after Van Island Colony Created) Douglas feared influx of American Miners would lead to American Annexation of the Mainland Communicated to Britain his fears and the Crown Colony of BC was created

The Joining 1866 The two colonies were Broke… Gold rush rapidly increased Pop. But huge Pop. Shrank rapidly after the Gold rush Economic downturn Britain decided to join the two colonies to save money (1866)

Gold Rush Began in 1857 when a First Nations Fur Trader found gold in Thompson River 1858 Rumours of GOLD had travelled down to California. The Gold Rush ended by 1866 as people weren’t able to find gold along the rivers anymore

VANCOUVER In 1865 First Sawmills open up in the area. - How is this connected with the Gold Rush? 1868 Gassy Jack opens saloon (Gas Town established… small) 1885 CPR Terminus (End of the Line) constucted and BOOM. - Population increases, buildings increase, development increases.
