Connecting Eastside and Victoria Leisure Centre - Update St Ann’s and Dales Area Committee Presentation September 2010
Background Connecting Eastside will deliver a new public square including a market and events space at Sneinton Market, together with improvements to improve connections between the city centre and the eastside of the city, Sneinton and St Ann’s. Redevelopment of Victoria Leisure Centre will provide a new and modern Leisure Centre facility providing swimming pools, a fun children’s splash pool area, fitness and dance spaces and new health suite.
Highway Works – Connecting Eastside Connecting Eastside will radically improve pedestrian links between the city centre, Sneinton and St Ann’s in the Eastside area, while improving transport links for cyclists and traffic too. The highway works commenced in January 2010 and are on-going until spring 2011.
Sneinton Market – Connecting Eastside The redevelopment of Sneinton Market aims to create a new public space that will be a venue for markets, gatherings, events, performances, festivals and community use. Extensive stakeholder and public consultation took place in late 2009 and April A positive response to the design proposals was received.
Sneinton Market Design – Connecting Eastside The design includes: Granite paving recreating the historic layout of the market buildings. Seating Trees A water feature made up of a series of lined water jets.

Public Art As part of the project the architect has involved artist, Neville Gabie. Neville has developed ideas with the local community to incorporate public art into the square. Central to the work is the concept of food.
Public Art Proposals Planting scheme – Nottingham Medlar Trees - Planting of fruit trees in the square for communal use. Text in the paving - Working with local writer Wayne Burrows to develop engraved text to be included in the paving scheme for the square. Local Artist Commissioning Programme - Local artists will be working with Neville, contributing to a programme of events in 2011.
