To develop a world-class center for education, patient care, and research that prepares Nevada’s doctors with the most innovative and technologically advanced forms of medical training while serving the health care needs of a diverse population through community partnerships

 Master academic affiliation agreement  Programs planned together  KUMC (University) hired physicians  KU Hospital provided space, administration, support personnel, and coordination  Built every program to insure quality and patient satisfaction  Built cardiology, cancer, neuroscience and orthopedics throughout to whole time

 Almost bankrupt 17 years ago  University of Kansas and state allowed it to become a separate authority in 1998 with affiliation agreement to KUMC to provide education, research and patient care  Made top 50 grossing nonprofit hospital list -- $3.96B (2014)  Ranked top 50 in all 12 major specialties on America’s Best Hospitals list (2014) Becker’s Hospital Review U.S. News & World Report

What will it take to do this in Las Vegas? UMC and UNLV Medicine affiliate to become the premier academic center in the state Jointly plan and invest in clinical programs to generate the revenue that will ultimately support the missions of teaching, research, and community service Grow and expand residency programs Advance clinical research programs

 What will it take? Integration of all the components of a health care system: − UNLV Medicine Care − Referral hospitals, physicians − VA hospital − Rehab facilities − Nursing homes − Community health centers

 Physician pipeline begins 2017 with charter class of 60 students  Increase to 120 students by 2023

 UNLV Medicine expanding patient care sites Develop 3 community clinics to serve Medicaid and underserved patients Specialty care remain located near UMC Outpatient practice teaching sites for primary and specialty care: − Longitudinal integrated clerkship − Residency and fellowship education − Hospitality in health care − Population health

 UNLV School of Medicine will take these steps:  Recruit faculty to teach residents & students in more specialties than currently exist here  Build more residencies in all needed specialties  Set up Medicaid clinics for faculty to teach residents and students
