Learning Problems Vocabulary size is too large for the non-native speakers. Learners lack the ability to hold a word in the long-term memory.

Strategies …… help learning and comprehension, and is particularly useful for leaners who do not cope well with guessing from context. (Chapter 8) Encourage and instruct students to use dictionaries effectively

Dictionary use Electronic dictionaries 2 Types of dictionaries Monolingual dictionaries Bilingual dictionaries In general, monolingual dictionaries contain much more information about each word than bilingual dictionaries do. (Chapter 8)

Dictionary use Find the dictionary entry. Choose the right sub-entry. 2 Steps of consulting dictionaries E.g. He was scrubbing the flags in front of the house.

Strategies focused, efficient and certain allow learners to consciously focus on an aspect of word knowledge that is not easily gained from context of dictionary use allow learners to control the repetition and processing of the vocabulary (Chapter 8) Encourage and instruct students to use word cards effectively

Word Card Making 2 Priority should be given to high-frequency words and to words that clearly fulfill language use needs. Small cards should be used so that they can be easily carried around.
