How should you do the exam? Where to start?

Step 1 – Pre-reading  Skim and highlight as you go  Title  First SECTION (introduction)-especially last paragraph  All subtitles  Last paragraph (conclusion) Goal : Understand topic, main argument, and purpose

Step 2 - Questions Purpose of exam – ANSWER QUESTIONS Focus on understanding the questions Don’t try to answer at first, try to UNDERSTAND! Tip: Read the CLOZE first – a summary of the text

What to do when looking at the questions…  Mark important information  Names, key words, paragraphs/parts of the text  Learn about the subject of text  Decide the order to do the questions…

Which questions to do first…  LOCAL questions  Lift the questions from the text  Give a paragraph/section/name….

Type of Local Questions  Chart/Table– with paragraph/section  Multiple choice – if gives a name/paragraph/section

Which questions to do last…  GLOBAL questions  Deeper understanding  Long and difficult to understand If a question takes too long – Move ON!!

Types of global questions  Multiple choice  Main idea/purpose is…  Infer/inference  Open questions  Cloze summary

Step 3 – Reading Text  Read text with purpose of answering one question at a time!  Highlight the answers in the text and put the question number next to it – easier to find later

General Note  You can’t avoid reading  Most of the text you’ll need to read – but not all in-depth  Don’t translate the whole text!!!!  Always remember to look for synonyms!  Pay attention to connectors – especial contrasting  Time yourself
