L6 Origami Pipe Bending Part 1 3F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 StoppersTape for pipes fixation

Result Bending Part 1 4F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015

Experiences Part 1 Bending We bent four pipes in which we modify the tool Only few modifications (stoppers) were necessary to get good results and repeatability It needs about 7 min. to bend the flat part for one L6 Origami pipe Movie links: – (6:48) – (0:33) 5F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015

L6 Origami Pipe Bending Part 2 This is the “old” bending tool, this worked well for two loops but not for the full flat Origami part 6F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015

L6 Origami Tool Modification 1/2 7F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 Linear guides Moveable Parts EPDM pipe fixation (schema) Origami pipe The Pipe is only fixed on the middle part (with EPDM) and so it is possible to bend the pipes to a radius shape

L6 Origami Tool Modification 2/2 8F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 Linear guides Moveable Parts EPDM pipe fixation (schema) Origami pipe In this position we can check the shape of the Origami pipe

Result L6 Origami Cooling Pipe 9F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September D bending attempts resulted in erratic tension and deformations

Option 1 10F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 Pipe is so soft that it follows 3D shape almost by itself How much force is needed to bring the pipe into the correct position? We tested this at the very end

Force Needed We use the flat Origami pipes (part1) It needs 19g weight to bring the pipe into the correct form Single clip holds pipe with more then 50g weight applied (in reality, force is distributed over several clips) Does this deform the ladder? 11F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September g

L5 Ladder Deformation Test 1/2 12F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 We test the ladder without weight. (reference value)

L5 Ladder Deformation Test 2/2 13F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 After that we put the weight on the pipe clip and measure again. Results: WeightΔZΔZ 19g2µm 100g15µm 200g65µm 19g 100g200g

Option 2 Idea brought up Toru Modify the tool for the flat part bending such that we can bend the 3D shape in one step We have some ideas and we made last week a first test with dummy support structure  looks good It needs 2 weeks to modify the tool and 1 week for fine adjustment  hard to finish before B2GM (flat Origami pipe will be sent to KEK after Trieste) 14F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015

L6 Origami Pressure Test We attached one end to the water high pressure system and closed the other side Incresed pressure gradually from 0 to 300 bar –No movement of pipe could be seen We waited 15 minutes and nothing happened Finally pressure was taken away 15F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 SUCCESS!

Set Screw Fixation Tool 1/2 16F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015 I tested my tool with 40Ncm and then with the regular torque screwdriver and there is no difference  no torque gets lost in the flex part Torque screw driver Flexible part

Set Screw Fixation Tool 2/2 17F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015

Summary & Outlook The flat part of the Origami pipe bending works well and is under control 3D bending attempts resulted in erratic tension and deformations Option 1 is to use the flat pipes –CMM measurement result show no real deformation at 19g (needed weight) Option 2 is the modify the tool for the flat bending part Successful L6 Origami pressure MPI Set screw fixation tool is produced and HEPHY To Do: –Redesign of the Origami bending tool for 3D shape bending –Redesign SVD Dockbox 18F.Buchsteiner (HEPHY Vienna)07 September 2015
